The Roar's A-League Men tips and predictions: Round 26 - the jostle for finals positions is on in earnest
Here is the way the Roar expert panel sees all the action unfolding across the final weekend of play prior to the semi-finals.
Sydney FC fan favourite Ali Abbas been granted an early release from his A-League contract to pursue an opportunity overseas, likely with a Korean club.
The Iraqi international left winger and fullback was on contract until the end of May, but has attracted interest from Asia and decided to call it a day after four seasons with the Sky Blues.
“I am very sad to be leaving Sydney FC but this is a good opportunity overseas” Abbas said.
“I have really enjoyed my time here and I am so proud to have represented the fantastic members and fans at Allianz Stadium.
“The support I have received throughout the years has made me proud to be a part of the Sky Blue family, and the club will always remain in my memory.”
Abbas made 68 A-League appearances since joining Sydney in 2012, and this season returned from a potential career-ending knee injury that sidelined him for more than a year.
The 29-year-old’s departure leaves coach Graham Arnold with even less depth in the left-back role following Alex Gersbach’s move to Norway in January.
It comes as Sydney continue their successful Asian Champions League campaign, looking to top their group on Tuesday when they play Guangzhou Evergrande in China.
“Ali has been a great servant for Sydney FC and has showed fantastic courage,” Arnold said.
“We would have liked to have kept Ali for another year but understand this was an opportunity he couldn’t turn down.
“I’d like to thank Ali for everything he’s given to the club over the past four seasons and I wish him well in this new chapter.”
