The Hawks have had a funny old 2016 season to date. Despite at times seeming to be a shadow of their former selves, they’re still better than all the rest and sit at the top of the table with two wins more than any other side in the comp.

That comes despite having a handful of unconvincing wins this season where you genuinely felt they could lose but ultimately managed to come away with the victory. So is their current position a true reflection of where they’re at? We’ll know better whether it’s a mirage or a reality once it gets put to the test in September.

The Blues, on the other hand, are clearly a long way off the level of the top eight but, despite that, would be fairly happy with how this season has gone. They’ve avoided being in the bottom four, taken one big scalp over Geelong, and still have time to take another, with a bit of luck.

Can they do that today? It’s certainly not beyond the realm of possibility. When they bring their best football they have the pressure and defensive ability to shut down a team like the Hawks for large parts of the game.

However, even if they do manage to do that, it’ll be a question of whether or not they can score enough to keep the Hawks at bay. With a forward line resembling a poorly-made Frakenstein’s monster, that really doesn’t seem likely.

Prediction
Realistically speaking, the Hawks are clear favourites and deservedly so. There’s maybe the slightest hint of upset potential, about a five or ten per cent chance, but the vastly more likely scenario is that the Hawks will win comfortably.

Hawthorn by 36.
