Proud dad, but that’s how long I, (like many) have waited for the Bloody Slow Cup to come over. The rise of the Springboks also deepens the pain. Rubbish Rugby comes down to rubbish game plan and couple that with players who look like certain wildlife when staring into headlights. Rugby smarts seems to be missing in that squad. Seems like as soon plan A is nullified, it’s Gary Owen’s for the rest of the game and hope it lands our way. We will never match the AB’s, Boks and Pumas upfront on a consistent basis, until then, we will always play back foot rugby.

Great Province that Counties Manukau region. I remember as a kid when trekking across the ditch with me old man, we’d watch a few games of NPC and the mercurial Bruce Robertson. What a player, and as we all know and seen over the past few decades, the world has given us a plethora of awesome centres but Bruce was something else. He and Danie Gerber from the Republic were nothing short of awesome and would look right at home in today’s game. Good on him for heading back to where it all started.

Spot on about Michael Alaalatoa, I truly believe that he is our biggest loss. He has gone from strength to strength and everytime I watch him play, I cringe at the thought that he may very well be wearing a black jersey. Another Steve Devine lost to the NZ Rugby Machine. If young Lomax decides to dart off back to his ancestoral homeland, then what we will have to do is sign another Argie or two in the front row.

In a parallel universe, that would be great. I’d like to see a breakaway governing body for rugby. Let’s call it “Rugby Australia.” Create a new domestic comp with 6 teams. Tahs, Reds, Brumbies, Rebels, Force & Sun Wolves. There will be a national draft and trading of sorts, (excluding Sun Wolves). There will also be a colts comp running as well. Bringing back Australia ‘A’ and putting them into the Pacific Nations Cup to play Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Japan, Canada, USA. Each team will have a specified set of feeder clubs e.g. A club in QLD can be a feeder for the Tahs and Eastwood in Sydney can be a feeder for the Reds etc.

I sat down to watch the game with a staunch league (Broncos) supporter, my brother in law. He was converted after that game and I sadly had to let him know that it is only available across the ditch. That was a great game of rugby and had that been free to air here in Australia, the thought of that… Sigh.
