Ahhh, you missed that he was kidding too?

New Zealand the Brave run away as danger approaches

The comment where the original poster said “I was kidding” is another hint.

If a few grumpy kiwis commenting on this post spent more time watching Monty Python and less time getting angry at satire that went over their heads on the internet they’d have happier lives.

Would have thought they would have been in a better mood after smashing us in the rugby. Maybe Cricket Australia should have sent their groundskeepers over to Twickenham to strike fear into the kiwis.

New Zealand the Brave run away as danger approaches

Am desperately looking for sarcasm in your line “I often write about sport, read about sport etc that I know nothing about.”

But on reading your article again, I’ve got nothing…

Isn’t it time women and men played professional sport together?

Ra, you are deliberately ignoring the evidence the original poster presented in his article. What about that time when Zoe Goss got a good male cricketer out? In a friendly match 20 years ago? Therefore they would obviously be competitive.

Isn’t it time women and men played professional sport together?

Both bowling well, but keep in mind that some of Siddle’s wickets have been those of hoeplessly out of form Poms, and he hasn’t had to bowl to a rampant Warner, Clarke or Haddin!! I think that makes Broad’s contribution a little more robust.

Also, Broad hasn’t had the benefit of bowling to batsmen who have just wet their pants facing an over from Mitch, or been bogged down by pressure applied by Harris or Lyon.

ASHES: Talking points from day three at the WACA

Nice read, Sheek, but you got the order wrong in this comment. Don’t you mean South Africa is England A, Australia is England B, England is England C & New Zealand is England D??

Test cricket is still Australia's summer game

A day late here, but the ignorance of statistics and common sense in the asssertion “He’d average 68 against the group” is absolutely staggering.

Do “Experts” on The Roar ever get relegated to the right hand side when they publish something like this?

The numbers don't lie - Siddle has no Ashes bunny

Their names both start with a C!!!

The Clarke, Cook coincidences in the Perth Test

Good article. Only complaint is I think Hughes comes in for Rogers at the end of the season IF Hughes continues his form, and Rogers doesn’t lift his game. Hughes was unfairly dropped once in England for Watto to accomodate a then fragile Mitch Johnson. And then he was promoted back into the team at a time when he was in dreadfull form in Shield – of course he was going to fail if you put him under pressure while he is in a slump.

I was a huge advocate for Doolan, Silk and Maddinson at the start of the year, but they have frustratingly underperformed, averaging 39, 35 and 38 in a season of strong Shield batting. I would prefer to promote them on weight of runs – now is the time to step up, boys.

So I’m looking for a replacement for Watto at 3 against the SAF pace attack, which has been the big question for a while, hasn’t it?

Hughes should replace Watson in South Africa

I agree – I thought the toss was hugely influential in England, and without the rain, the toss would have decided every Test. Then Brisbane and Adelaide were great tosses to win, but these two have been such absolute smashings that perhaps we could have won in spite of the toss. Only one of our losses in England was a “smashing” comparable to these last two tests.

But Bearfax, I almost hope England win the toss at the WACA.

If they bat like most teams do, they have to survive Mitch on their worst bouncy day one WACA nightmare, and their previous advantage of getting Swanny to bowl the 4th innings has largely been nullified by his frustrating form Down Under.

If they dare emulate 2002’s Nasser Hussain and send us in to bat, they get accused of being scared of Mitch, we have to put up with a bit of first session movement from dibbly dobblies bowling at 135k, and then see if we can rack up 2/364 on the first day.

SPIRO: The Ashes haven't been won back, yet

Do you mean Hear, hear?

HENRY: Life's a Mitch right now for the English batsmen

Exactly. A bit like Chuck Norris doesn’t do push-ups, he pushes the Earth DOWN!!

What should be done with New Zealand cricket's alleged matchfixers?

Yes. About 4 years later.

If Australia win the Ashes, would Clarke retire?

Actually, his last test, he scored 22 and 6. It was a good game, shame you missed it.

Time running out for Watson as Adelaide Test approaches

It is a perfectly relevant comparison.

And in invoking Football as a good example of a sport with genuine global depth, he technically brought a gun to a knife fight.

Six Nations can't cut the mustard on the world rugby stage

Ronan, does that mean we can drop Watson now? His Test average used to look all right against last year’s crop of Shield batsmen, but looks a bit dimmer now…

Young batsmen shining on fairer Sheffield Shield pitches

Also, Watto has, at times been justified as a specialist batsman because his batting average stacked up okay against the best in Sheffield Shield.

If you combine this article with today’s “Young batsmen shining on fairer Sheffield Shield pitches” and see that we have 14 batsmen averaging over 45 already this season, maybe that is becoming less relevant?

TB, I think “Balance” is the key word here. Not just between batsmen and bowlers, but between pace and spin.

Maybe all those deriding guys earning Test places with lower averages than Hodge, Love, Hussey etc need to consider the Shield pitches for the last few seasons, when we had more than 20 bowlers taking more than 10 wickets at under 25 a piece.

I think when you say:

“before the last game Wales beat Aus a number of times”

what you meant to say was:

“before the last NINE games in a ROW Wales beat Aus a number of times”.

Six Nations can't cut the mustard on the world rugby stage

Ask yourself why France are ranked #6 then. Consistency. France are the Mitchell Johnson of the rugby world, it depends on who turns up on the day?
The terror of the Gabbatoir, or some meek muppet spraying it to second slip?
The scintillating Gallic backline or the cheese-eating surrender monkeys?

Six Nations can't cut the mustard on the world rugby stage

He s terrific in the shorter form of the game, so why don’t we just let him focus on that??

I think he can hold his own in the ODI team as a batsman, but in Tests, if he is too frequently injured to bowl at all, or bowl at his best, he doesn’t stack up. I am all for giving beginners an extended run to see if they can get used to Test cricket and excel, but 8 years is stretching it.

Time running out for Watson as Adelaide Test approaches

Well you said you don’t think he is suitable for Tests. I explained why I thought he was. I would have gladly used a longer sample size for Faulkner if he hadn’t been dropped after that debut.

A more relevant “Australian Selector’s” version of your example would be to drop Dhawan after that ordinary/disappointing debut.

Drop Bailey for Faulkner at Adelaide

Career ashes average of 43.11, actually, but granted that is still higher than Bailey.

Interesting question Shadow. At risk of getting in trouble again for using statistical evidence to answer a question about statistical evidence…

Last 20 Tests batting 19.50, bowling 33.45 – Personally I call that a bowler.
a better “purple patch” to consider is
Last 6 Tests – batting 50.00, bowling 25.61 – I’d call that an all rounder, and a pretty useful one, too, notwithstanding the massive cherry picking of data I think one needs to do to call him an all rounder!

Drop Bailey for Faulkner at Adelaide

No, I am genuinely scratching my head as to the second is. I like to think an all-rounder would tend to have a lower bowling average than a batting average or at least close to it. Well, a good one would.

If he meant Mitch, notwithstanding a great contribution with the bat at the Gabba I honestly think of him as a bowler for that reason.

Come to think of it, I am scratching my head as to who the first is. If Watto isn’t fit to bowl that kind of makes him a batsman as well.
