Yes, if you include Smith and Watson, our non bowling all-rounders.

The good Pope asked for evidence. I provided evidence. Not sure which part of that you don’t follow, Carmelin.

The fact my Test stats only include a sample of 1 Test is my point. Lucky we dropped him – obviously not suited to Test cricket.

I think maybe he put out a cook book?

Evidence like Test bowling average of 16.33, and a strike rate of 27?

Evidence like 142 FC wickets at 23.16 and strike rate of 46?

That being said, I wouldn’t replace Harris, I would use him to ease the workload on Harris, Sids and Mitch, rather than have our special “Non-bowling” all rounder.

Yeah, I wish I wasn’t suited to bowling in Tests like Faulkner.

With a Test bowling average of 16.33 vs “Proven Partnership Breaker” Watson’s bowling average for the same series of 89.50.

With a Test strike rate of 27.6 versus “Proven Partnership Breaker” Watson’s 256.5

With the wickets of Bell, Prior, Cook and Trott from his only Test before he was dropped to 12th man.

Great to see you could surmise he “isn’t suited to Tests” from such a poor showing.

Yes I do. His bowling stats are irrelevant if he isn’t bowling.

On his batting, I’d rather back somebody with a mid 30s batting average at the start of their career who might promise more if nurtured, than somebody who has had 8 years, where we know this is as good as it gets. We got rid of Marcus North because his batting average was almost exactly the same as Watto’s. ie Not good enough.

And thanks for reminding us of the century – how about the 84/87 innings when he DIDN’T score a century? Is this the conversion rate you want us to build an innings around?

I thought the biggest gripe we had with the selectors was the constant chopping and changing, with Lyon, Hughes, Quiney, Khawaja and Faulkner himself all recent examples. It doesn’t help their confidence or their form.

Whether or not you believe Bailey was the correct choice for the vacant batting spot, if he doesn’t get a decent crack at it, we should not have tried him in the first place.

The problem you have identified is that on a good batting wicket we will need an all rounder to shoulder some bowling load to protect the quicks for back to back Tests. So the REAL problem is that the all rounder we already have, in Watson, can’t be relied on to bowl enough overs to do this. Well, in case people haven’t noticed, he can’t bat reliably enough to justify being a Number Three either. So why not move on from the failed experiment of Watto as a specialist Test batsman, wish him all the best for the ODIs and T20s where he excels, and use Faulkner as our all rounder. He’ll get as many runs as Watto, just at number 7 instead of number 3.

That’s right, JGK, while they were offensive, I was surprised they were removed, as they were quite informative about how heartless, petty and small-minded a small percentage of the population are. The sheer weight of supportive comments on here are very encouraging though.

Jonathan Trott: a personal perspective

AussiKiwi, I think some of RedKev’s comments that were deleted from this thread and those of Mike Caxton on the other thread today are, sadly, EXACTY why people prefer to keep it private. And why those who speak out, like Glenn Mitchell, Jonathan Trott and others like Kirwan, Rathbone, Tune, Trescothick ought to be applauded for their bravery in speaking up, which far exceeds the bravery of the keyboard warriors around today.

I hope that anybody in a similar situation reviewing this thread would take heart from the overwhelming support exhibited by most posters here today.

Jonathan Trott: a personal perspective

Thanks Glenn.

Interesting how the comments from Red Kev and Mike Caxton on a similar thread here prove that in spite of their claims of cowardice or needing a cup of concrete, it actually takes a considerable amount of bravery to speak out and admit to needing help in these matters. Precisely because of the attitudes of these “brave” experts who hide behind their keyboards and try to kick people when they are down.

All the best Glenn. All the best, Trotty, come back and try to smash us again like you did last tour here.

Wow. Society has finally reached a point where SOME men can discuss mental health issues and seek help instead of topping themselves, like they used to. But you stick the boot in while a man is down and question both his bravery and his diagnosis.

Mike, I think you are in the wrong era.

Trott out of Ashes with stress-illness but Warner not to blame

Shame if that is the case. Hope he does come back – beating England is even more satisfying when they are at full strength.

Just remembering the 10/11 Ashes when Trotty destroyed us with scores of 29, 135*, 78, 4, 31, 168*, 0 for 445 at 89.00 while Cook scored 766 at 127.66.

We didn’t stand a chance!!

Trott out of Ashes with stress-illness but Warner not to blame

None of our business, actually. Agree he deserves our best wishes though.

That is “Qantas” Wallabies fans, to you, thank you!!!

I don’t think a lick up the bum is EVER needed. Not sure what sport you coach, Messa…

McKenzie cracks the discipline whip

Check the meaning of “Duress” please. You keep using that word, I do not think it means what you think it means. Asking somebody to agree to clear terms of employment in order to earn hundreds of thousands of dollars is not “under duress”.

McKenzie's tough decision will build winning culture

I suspect if you were ever really in the army you wouldn’t use the word marshall to mean military. Try martial next time.

Yet in the same article he warned his players not to. That was his direction.

Chris Rogers a key this summer

Give him 20 overs uphill into the breeze on Day 1, then when he breaks, get a good cricketer who doesn’t need to be wrapped in cotton wool into the team for the 2nd Test.

Watson set to bowl in Brisbane

Yeah, can’t believe they would value an ex Rugby player’s opinion over Pigeon’s…

Why is Ben Hilfenhaus being rested?

People shouldn’t blame the selectors for using white ball form to select for red ball matches. They have been given no alternative due to Cricket Australia’s insane scheduling and lust for the dollar over Test success. Therefore they have to use white ball form, hopefully with Ronan’s sensible overlay of considering HOW they scored their white ball runs, rather than just looking at stats. Good Luck Bails.

I’d be interested in a follow up article on how to use ODI form to pick BOWLERS for Tests… perhaps it depends on “Which” Mitch turns up in Brisbane.

ASHES: Why ODI efforts are relevant to Test selection

When it comes to the unluckiest spinner to miss out, how about Steve O’Keefe, with 93 FC wickets at 25.91 over Ahmed’s 63 at 31.66? Also a useful lower order bat.

The only thing in Ahmed’s favour is England’s historical “weakness against legspin” – or was that just a historical weakness against Warney?
