McReight was over the ball so many times with no reward. Full credit to him he kept trying

'Relieved, frustrated': Young gun's double helps Reds scrape home against Fiji in penalty-a-thon

That was hard to watch. Ref was a complete lottery. I’m not sure how teams are supposed to find rhythm with such unpredictable decision making.
Fiji bring down how many mauls illegally?
But 3 (slight) off sides is a yellow card.
Last try came after a Knock on with clearly no advantage.
Add the heat, and I’m cutting them all some slack.
Reds definitely missing some cohesion, but I’ll take the W.

'Relieved, frustrated': Young gun's double helps Reds scrape home against Fiji in penalty-a-thon

Yep. Valid point.
Still an entertaining game though.
In the end Brumbies deserved the W, but I’m putting that down to setpiece dominance at defensive excellence. It makes them a difficult team to beat in arm wrestle Rugby.

ANALYSIS: Unbeaten Brumbies hang on against Reds as O'Connor sends timely reminder to Wallabies

That’s a fair point. Brumbies definitely better at setpiece.
I still think the infringements by Brumbies inside their defensive 22 probably deserved harsher punishment.
IMO the ruck free for all really does a disservice to the game.
Brumbies are probably the best defensive team in the comp at this point though. Their defensive connection is impressive

Only thing is PeterK, the Brumbies sealed off maybe 60% of their attacking rucks, and could easily have been penalized off the park.
Any other ref would have YCd them for the repeated infringements when Reds on attack. I agree he let the Reds off in the scrum, but if he’d been more accurate through the rest of the game it might have looked very different too.

I suspect travel costs at the moment, competing options and I quiet economy and let’s face it, it’s just not an ideal time to try and attract a whole lot of people to travel.

The product is likely one issue, but I doubt it’s the only one.

Flights from where I live are up 150% from a couple of years ago – it’s just not as easy/cheap to get around.

The Wrap: Another Super Rugby Round of hits and frustrating misses

Interesting take on it. I guess I’ll just choose to enjoy both then Malotru.

'Humble pie': Larkham's Brumbies spoil Waratahs party as young guns shine on Super Rugby debuts

Very much a kick fest. Some very good play, but seriously NZ breakdowns are just so scrappy. You could penalise every one.

Enjoyable to watch though once the kicks settled down.

'Humble pie': Larkham's Brumbies spoil Waratahs party as young guns shine on Super Rugby debuts

I disagree Malotru. Both games were different, but also both very enjoyable to me. The NZ game – well the breakdown was a mess, the ball bobbling all over place. Defence was better, but I thought the attack through the Aussie game was more enjoyable. I’m a bit surprised by all the comments here really. I’m a Reds fan, i thought both games were fast paced and good to watch.
Neither game was perfect rugby. But I wouldn’t say the NZ side of the ditch was better.

It’s odd to me, particularly the barn door obvious side entries, particularly on attack. But NZ teams adapt quickly so I think they’ll adjust to whatever they get hit with

REACTION: 'We came out shellshocked'- Reds rue slow start as Crusaders cruise to win

I think Nz teams could well be smashed by NH refs in the coming internationals. Heaps of poorly controlled clean outs, side entries and obstructions. None of it called.

I guess time will tell

Was s very fortunate experience. 👍

Super Rugby tipping panel Week 11: It's a locked way to the top

The fijian wedding I was very fortunate to attend many years ago came with the traditional men’s kava bowl after the proceedings. They were very kind, insisting I drink the whole bowl each time. It was fun and a great expereince but I’m in no rush to revisit….

Super Rugby tipping panel Week 11: It's a locked way to the top

I’ve had kava more times in my life than I ever wanted. You can have my bowl.

Maybe you can dip in to Harry’s pod travel budget?

Politics on the roar – you wouldn’t read about it…….

G’day Brett.
Should be an interesting weekend of Rugby. Hopefully ABC is sending you to Suva for it……

Super Rugby tipping panel Week 11: It's a locked way to the top

Well, not galling to me.
I certainly y think it didn’t look great. But you are correct, all within the rules.

REACTION: 'Building blocks' there for Rebels after drought-breaking win as captain calls for fans to lift

Hi TWAS, I feel like you’re taking this all a bit seriously.
Slowing up the game so you can control a tighter game has always been part of the contest, and yes sometimes it drifts into poor form, where by hopefully the ref blows a free kick against. But it’s always a balance. I just think in this particular instance, sitting there delaying the kick setup in that manner looked pretty poor. I’m not criticising To’omua’s character or value or commitment to a fair game. I just think in this instance it looked poor. And I feel the same with place kickers who spend a long time after teeing up the ball.
But there is an easy solution, stop the clock after the try is awarded. Restart with the kick off. The only loss is every rare rushed kick off to catch the other team off guard which is really not a feature of professional Rugby, and often not allowed by the Ref anyway.

Not illegal. And yes utilising the rules as they stand. Still poor form IMO
I think post try kicks should be during time off anyway

REACTION: 'Building blocks' there for Rebels after drought-breaking win as captain calls for fans to lift

I agree that was poor form, but to describe him as hopeless and also a bad sport – similarly poor form.

3 exciting games on a Friday night. Not a bad start for this round I reckon

That seemed a genuine hospital pass to BT really.

We’re not telling you what to do, but what if you play Jock and Jordie at 15, at the same time, and all the best with the cohesion! You’re welcome, bye!

Wallabies squad selection was largely predictable but mostly pointless

I found it surreal at one level. I’ve never really thought he was great (perhaps because he blocked my view of a fantastic scrum a few years back – hence my avatar) and haven’t seen much of him since. But he was excellent. Confident, controlled and wanting to let the game happen.
It just shows how we are all learning I guess. But he must be up there around best in the world at the moment!

The Wrap: Rugby needs to keep the scrums up and put the ball down

Good article Geoff, thanks.

I have to add that I thought Wayne Barnes was absolutely exceptional this weekend reffing the 6N. I’m not sure if it was him, or that the players just played a better game, but it flowed, it was fun, and he didn’t seem to be pushed around. I was impressed. Hoping the SH refs can watch and learn.

The Wrap: Rugby needs to keep the scrums up and put the ball down

The Drua taking multiple 3s was fascinating, and IMO great to see. They seemed to find a balance between good game management and fijian flair that if they can conitnue will see them competitive against other sides too.

The Wrap: Cool as you like, James O’Connor provides a masterclass in brand management
