North Queenslander born and bred. I enjoy watching Rugby League, Union and Cricket. On the weekends you may see me shouting at the refs from the Southern Stand at 1300 SMILES Stadium or playing on a rank turner at the Wanderers' Cricket Club. Congratulations to the Australian National Cricket Team for bringing home the Ashes. Now, time to take out the Proteas.

Mate O’Neil has made a bundle of errors in recent years, has been one of the worst offenders in the comp. Also remember 3 tries in 2 seasons, didn’t have the runs on the board. I can understand why he was dropped, but that stint in the Q-Cup worked for him. He’s come back with confidence. He has primarily played on the wing this season as well. He would average more meters due to kick returns. Also Kahu has more try assists than Te Maire, and has made less errors. Not denying he is the fastest back in the competition but his catching is more natural than Te and he brings the ball back with some venom which the team has been missing. Well given it was his first game there in a few weeks I think we can excuse him for being out of position, Te Maire was guilty of the same things despite spending a few games consecutively in the fullback position. Mosby would lap him in a footrace but he also lacks defensive intensity and has poor training standards, hopefully that changes but Kahu has a professional attitude and is a team player. Jensen will be a good replacement but to say that McGuire’s absence won’t be missed is ridiculous. He leads the linespeed, gets through the most defensive work in the team and has a burning desire to win. If the rest of the squad displayed his attitude they’d be in the top 8.

Cowboys are only a shandy away

Thurston’s defence has improved remarkably in recent times. He made a few good one on one tackles in the weekend’s game, including a nice cutting tackle on Papalii. Although I will admit he isn’t renowned for his defensive prowess, it is far better than it used to be.

Heroes and villains of NRL Round 1

Nice debut Joel. The Cowboys made it a closer game than it should have been with those intercept tries but the Raiders came out swinging in the first 30 minutes. This come from behind win should be a nice morale booster for the Cowboys.

I agree. It was nice to get a solid comeback win for the Cowboys but I think the Raiders played quite well in the opening 30 minutes. The Cowboy’s goaline defence was solid but the game was made closer than it should have been thanks to two intercept tries. Still, promising signs considering the Cowboys were behind in the penalty count and handed the Raider’s 8 points on a platter. Hopefully thier passing game tightens up next week. Other than that, the Cowboy’s attack, defence and kicking game were all quite good.

Great days play Australia. Time to bat the Saffas out of the game. Great knocks by Warner and Clarke, with the latter playing a supreme innings thus far. Very determined and gritty. This Test match is ours for the taking.

I enjoy both League and Union for what they are but please, don’t kid yourself. Reds Vs Waratahs pales in comparison to State of Origin. Looking forward to the fixture regardless.

Yep, too long mate. Something to put in the cabinet other than wooden spoons. Very happy with the win. No we didn’t get an interruption but a storm passed us during the game and I feared that we would loose reception. Fortanatley we didn’t because final was a very enjoyable game.

Cowboys win first title at NRL Nines

Apart from the Cowboys, the Warriors were my favourite team to watch this tournament. It was an absolute pleasure. Thanks for putting on a great show Auckland.

Warriors on song in Auckland Nines

Up the Cows! Finally a trophy we can hide all of the spoons behind. It was great that the team showed real grit in defence. Holding the Warriors scoreless was a true feat. Hopefully that same doggedness carries over into the season proper and we should go quite well. Now, what to spend the money on?

I think the Cowboy’s need to apply that same tenacity in defence they showed during the nines and they’ll go far this year. Match Thurston’s determination and defend like demons.

The top 10 players in the NRL

Smithy is a champion player, immortal in waiting. Smith is an intelligent player, more so than most. He doesn’t run up to the referees and begin to carry on in an obvious attempt to waste time. He is far more subtle. He approaches them casually and has a brief, well mannered counsel with them. Gallen and other captains like Ennis just run up to the refs to whine. I agree with Don, the way both Gallen and Smith approach the refs is very different. And yes, Gallen hasn’t been the same since 2011 but is still an Ubermensch, the best lock in the game by far.

What a try that was! Great to see him outpace the fleet footed prop Martin Kennedy to score that try.

Cronk had the 2012 Grand Final on a string. Best half-back going around. He doesn’t play ad lib footy, which may make him seem boring to some. But I’ll have a structured halfback anyday over a flashy Johnson type halfback.

I would have Gallen in there over Thaiday. The P Train is a true ironman. 80 minute workhorse who I’d love to have in my team. I would also switch Slater and Hayne’s positions but other than that I think you’ve nailed that list.

It’s a quandry all right. No one deserves to be dropped after this test. I think Doolan looks like a genuine prospect for the future at any rate.

McLaren was truly brained by Johnson there, took his eye off the ball. Bradman said he was never hit on the head because he always watched the cherry.

Great to see you displaying some fine sportsmanship biltongbek. It will be interesting to see if your boys can turn things around in 4 days.

Good work mate. Stayed the full course.

I don’t think anyone except for Mitch himself could have ever dreamed of his amazing turnaround. Early days yet, but Australia might be coming back to the good ‘ol days.

Too right Bryan. Siddle does the donkey work for the team and performs superbly. Bowling long tight spells against set batsmen with a decaying ball. Despite this, he still unfairly attracts much criticism from many circles. I think Morkel was a bit off during his spells, perhaps his injury had something to do with it. But yes, so far Siddle has looked better. Hopefully we can get 1 more wicket before tea to really send the Saffas panicking.

I wouldn’t want to bat last on this pitch.

My mistake then, I thought that sounded off. Cricbuzz is not a credible source for getting batting lineups.

This will make for them interesting viewing then. I won’t go to bed until Johnson is dragged out of the attack.

That is why I was relieved when Australia named an unchanged bowling attack for this Test. Everyone is working so well together at the moment. Time for Harris to get in on the action.
