I’m not sure how he goes as a coach, but he was a great ambassador and mentor during my time with the Wahronnga Tigers (U7’s – U14’s).
He would turn up to training every now and then, show up most Saturday home games and present the trophies to each player at the end of the year. He had huge influence on the parents which in turn translated to passion amongst the community.

Winners take chances, and that is just what the Wallabies need right now: Is it time to start listening to David Campese?

Agreed on Skelton, for me he was a bit of a liability. He’s very high in contact and was lucky to not have been pilfered a few times. He also didn’t have much go forward which surprised me as all the goss was how strong he is. In saying that, the whole pack was a liability. You can’t win games with a pack going backwards, no matter how good your 10 is.

Studs and duds: 'Horrendous' Vunivalu 'will cop a caning', Quade Cooper 'not the answer' as Carter stakes RWC claim

Couldn’t agree more. It’s painful to know our “b” team is non existent.
I’d like to see Hunt back too. He had so much potential and was shaping up to be a class #10. It would have been interesting to see how he and quade gelled, particularly on the big stage.
I think Gordon needs to be on the bench too. He is the real deal and needs to be blooded before it’s too late.
I’d also fast track the waratahs #6 into the squad. The blonde guy. He’s Hooper 2.0 and so bring him in to learn and rest hoops for Argentina and SA.

Michael Cheika's loyalty is now to a fault

Whilst were at it can we get rid of phipps? When he came on it was almost comical.

The good, the bad and the ugly from Bledisloe 1

Whilst Hooper was out muscled a couple of times he was fairly dominant in most of his hit ups. He tends to wiggle his way through but none the less gains the necessary meters. Almost the whole forward pack was out muscled in individual hit ups and so so I think to target Hooper in this regard is wrong.

None the less, line outs were an absolute joke and something needs to be done as soon as possible. Admittedly I don’t know what the quick fix is but I sure hope cheika does. I think losing Hooper isn’t the answer, particularly when we crave fitness and “heart”.

I also thought the all blacks looked tired moments before they got their hands on the ball in the back half of the first 40. I remember thinking we might have them here and so there is hope. We just need to take our chances.

Do lineout woes go hand in hand with Pooper against All Blacks?

As Nic has pointed out in this article, the problem is not Hooper. Besides, I feel the Wallabies are in the midst of turning this lull around. It takes time to rebuild…

True re overseas selection but how are we seriously meant to create a better image and genuine interest in RU without our captain and team motor? Retaining Hooper was the right decision. We have lost so many great player to the overseas purse which has been discussed on these forums endlessly and now we have a success story in retaining a player who most likely will go down as one of the greats of Aus rugby.I don’t see how this is a bad thing (whether you think he’s the best 7 or not).

We have a great ambassador of the game, who leads from the front, staying in Australia to champion Rugby Union. Thats a win in my books.

Why Michael Hooper is the Six Million Dollar Man

Thanks Nic, great article as always. Im a huge Hooper fan and admittedly can’t understand why there are so many naysayers. RA has done the right thing in securing hoops for 5 years for not only his playing ability but his image and what he represents. Imagine if we lost him overseas, it would be a disaster and I feel only then the naysayers would realise how valuable he is.

Why Michael Hooper is the Six Million Dollar Man

Shame they didn’t offer a new design this year.

Genia: We should wear the Indigenous jersey more often

The Wallabies also need to trust themselves and back their ability. Whilst playing in your own half isn’t ideal, constantly kicking away possession is never going to win you a game. I would like to see the wallabies take more ownership in earning the right to enter the opposition half by backing their talent rather than kicking it away and (usually) ending up with a net loss.

What the Wallabies need to fix during the Rugby Championship

I just want to see a genuine platform to win the world cup from the Wallabies, which I’m quietly confident about.
I also want to see form from every team out there! I think next years world cup has the potential to be the most competitive ever at this rate.

The June Tests panel: What are we hoping to see from our national sides?

Latu should be there full stop. He is the most underrated hooker in Aus.

Wallabies name replacement for injured Uelese

No, not Hangian. He’s been playing second row. It’s Will Miller. He’s the Norths #7 but tahs play him at 6

The Wallabies bolters: Have they done enough?

The Waratahs #6 is class. His name escapes me but if I was Cheik I’d give him a run.

The Wallabies bolters: Have they done enough?

There were certainly some poor reffing calls but that’s the game, you play the whistle.

The waratahs problem in the second half, and where we lost the game, was a lack of possession. With ball in hand we looked very dangerous yet if we were anywhere in our own half we kicked it away. You must have ball in hand to win a game. I couldn’t understand the tactics in the second half. The forwards were tired, sure, but refusing to use the backline is just insane, particularly when their counter attack is so good. There was only one instance of a net gain from a kick and so I just don’t understand why we kept giving it away.

We need more confidence to run the ball.

Waratahs suffer Super Rugby heartbreak

Great article, Nick. Thanks!

Who has been tampering with Taniela Tupou?

Well said Fionn, couldn’t agree more.

And Mr Lord, Mafi has played several games for Japan which makes him ineligible for Wallabies. How do you not know this?

The Waratahs' stunning victory doesn't let Daryl Gibson off the hook

Isn’t Horwitz a Kiwi?
I don’t see how you can’t have Hooper, Pocock or Beale in the team. They’re both game changers with huge amounts of experience.

Jake Gordon is a huge prospect at #9. I don’t think he’s far behind Genia at all. Give him game time and he’ll mature into the real deal.

Different players and kettle of fish. You’re comparing apples and oranges.

Michael Cheika deserves a break - and our respect

You misread my post, we weren’t at that stage but were becoming it. Cheika was handed the reins of an ageing team with no depth who weren’t prepared for the evolving game.

The England game was indeed embarrassing, but I wouldn’t go as far to suggest we were a laughing stock. In any sense, look how far we’ve come since. Cheika has evolved this team into real RWC contenders and given the game a whole lot more credibility (not to be confused with the ARU’s destruction of credibility). Further to this, he’s built an identity to Australian rugby which I think was lost.

Michael Cheika deserves a break - and our respect

Agree 100%. He has taken us from potentially being the laughing stock of world rugby to being a dead set chance for the RWC which is no easy feat. There is a lot of talk regarding his win % but I would hate to think what it would be had Cheika not stepped in.

If you’re reading this Cheika, 95% of Wallabies fans are behind you mate. Stuff the rest.

How quickly your narrative has changed. A month ago you were writing articles asking for cheikas head! What’s next, praise for hooper?!

Tomorrow may decide if Foley or Hodge will wear the 10 against England

I agree with you Will, I think Beale should have a crack at the #10 jersey. He played his schoolboy years there and given he’s been handed the second play maker role at #12 I would have assumed he’s the next logical choice.

To be fair, I don’t think Hodge will be out of his depth but I feel as though Beale has more to offer in terms of flair and just being generally dangerous in attack (which is what the Wallabies have been missing for some time now at #10).

My guess is Beale will come into the line as a second play maker in any case but personally I would have done it the other way round with Beale at #10 and Hodge at #15.

Beale best to steer Wallabies at No.10

I can’gt quite understand why Jake Gordon is ignored. He’s the most logical future no.9.

In regards to the #10 conundrum, Beale, Hunt or Hodge can all play there and my assumption is they have been told this. Surely Cheika is running at least one of them at 10 during training – does anyone have any insight into this?
