All great points made in opposition to expansion.
You only have to see the standard of round games played without State of Origin stars to realise that even 2 extra sides would stretch the pool of League talent to its absolute limits.
Get the game right in Sydney first. We have a long way to go to dominate Sydney the way the AFL dominates Melbourne. We need a better organised game, with better sponsorship and exposure driven by higher gate takings and more advertising dollars. That equals more junior footy, which in turn leads to a deeper talent pool, and then – in the distant future – there will be scope for more teams.
Mergers only lose fans, and premature expansion reeks of desperation.
Gallop and some of his precious Sydney NRL clubs must go
The money earned for the code, as a non profit organisation, goes straight back into the code. That means advertising, keeping clubs afloat, sponsoring junior AFL, promoting the game. This means a better p[roduct for players, and for fans.
$154 million dollars over 5 years – thats a huge benefit for AFL.
To say that the system of online exclusivity – which is exactly the same as any broadcast deal – is not worth it as some miss out if they signed the wrong phone deal is short sighted in the extreme.
That money goes toward strengtheneing our code. A long way towards it.
