Any Roarers have some thoughts on who will be the top try-scorer at this year’s Rugby World Cup?

Depending on which bookie you choose, the odds indicate that Cory Jane and Zac Guilford are front-runners at this stage.

Guilford may be on the money, as he’s a good finisher and should get plenty of opportunities in the pool rounds against Canada and Japan.

Having said that, after his performance against Australia in Brisbane, Henry may use these games to have a look at other options and play Guilford off the bench or leave him out altogether – hard to rack up tries when you’re not in the team!

On that basis, Jane seems to be a safer bet.

In Pool B, Chris Ashton has to be up there. Odds are almost double that of Guilford, so this looks like a bargain!

Ashton regularly gets over the line – he’s scored nine tries in 13 matches for England – and as England appear to be in a relatively easy pool, Ashton could bag quite a few, early on and get a lead that would be hard to beat.

For Australia’s pool, I’m picking Digby Ioane. Like Guilford, he’s a great finisher and with the other Aussie backline wizards, I think he’ll be put into space plenty against some of the weaker sides – particularly Russia and the USA!

South Africa have arguably the most difficult pool with Wales, Samoa and Fiji to contend with and only Namibia looming as a try-fest match (although it remains to be seen if they will even try to score under the posts or opt for penalties and droppies instead?).

Interestingly, Bryan Habanna holds the record for most tries in a Rugby World Cup with eight (2007), an honour he shares with Jonah Lomu (1999).

Overall, my favourites are Ashton and Ioane. But, as an Aussie supporter, I’d like to see Digby walk away with the honours (and hopefully the World Cup as well!).
