In recent weeks, there has been increased talk about the new Big Bash format, in which the competition will increase to eight teams. Like all football codes in Australia, cricket is trying to gain higher ratings, bigger crowds and generally become the biggest competition in the country.

It makes me wonder why has domestic cricket suffered so many rises and falls as new forms of the game take over and how far can this competition go?

I think the sky’s the limit for Australia’s favorite sport.

This year’s Twenty20 competition has come long in leaps and bounds. It’s now the second biggest Twenty20 competition in the world. And it’s growing quickly.

The competition has grown immensely this year due to international players, match and player quality as well as non-Test playing Aussie internationals creating the spark and respect the competition needed.

The expansion of the competition will make the Big Bash a yearly event and a complete competition, unlike the five game series it is at the moment. With the expansion comes membership, supporters gear, pride, ratings and many other factors experienced in the NRL and AFL.

I predict that within ten years, the Big Bash will have larger crowds than the NRL, having already overtaken the A-League and eventually have the greatest percentage of ratings per match.

After all, unlike the AFL, NRL or Super 14, cricket is one of only a few sports that have fans spread evenly across Australia.
