BREAKING:Brian Waldron, the man at the centre of the Melbourne Storm salary cap saga, has reportedly resigned as chief executive of the new Melbourne Rebels Super Rugby franchise.

Former Storm chief executive Waldron offered his resignation to the club on Friday, ABC TV has reported.

Chairman of Melbourne Rebels Super Rugby franchise, Harold Mitchell, told SEN radio at 9am today that an emergency board meeting was called at Rebels headquarters this morning, where Waldron tendered his resignation and the Board had it accepted..

“It’s a sad day for sport in many ways, but we have to act in the interests of the Rebels and that’s what we’ve done.”

“And we announce that acting CEO will be Pat Wilson, an administrator with us, who has a long history of administration at the ARU and is well known to the players.

Mitchell expressed concerns for his former CEO in the wake of the Melbourne Storm’s salary cap scandal.

“I was certainly worried about individuals – they’ve got families and people around them and great pressures on them,” Mitchell told SEN radio.

“He was pretty shaken, no surprises there.

“If you stand back from a little bit of it; if you’re in public life the public own you, and it’s all over it. So I was just concerned for him as a person.

“As well as him, there’s probably one or two others there might be concern for the moment.”

Waldron quit his post at the Storm last year to take charge of the Rebels, due to enter the new Super 15 rugby union competition in 2011.
