Off the bat, I should make a brief introduction. My name is Rhys, I was born in South Australia and barrack for Collingwood. I hope we can still get along and be friends.

Anyway, 2011 marks a new era in AFL, one new team and next year another will be making its introduction. And I have an opinion that I feel is not the most elusive going around, but I don’t like them.

I’m not going to get into detail about it because I’m sure countless others have and I daresay they can say whatever I would want to in a much more eloquent way. Tangent aside, I don’t feel they should be in AFL.

Last weekend we were witness to the Gold Coast Suns’ inaugural match as an AFL competitor, against a club with a history that most clubs would pine for, the Carlton Blues.

Now, as I stated, I’m a Collingwood supporter, so it’s fair to assume I treat anyone affiliated with Carlton with a grain of animosity.

I don’t though, maybe it’s because I’m born and raised in South Australia, state of superior iced coffee and an infatuation with ugg boots that I’m still not certain came to be. That aside, I haven’t been exposed to the rivalry that Victorian fans share with each other. One day maybe I will, I hope so.

Over here though, the state stops for one thing only, the Showdown. It’s somewhat of a rush seeing a rivalry blossom, even if I am watching from the outer. That, and when iced coffee is on special at the shops.

So, Carlton and Gold Coast went at it last week, and Carlton won in one of the most convincing ways that can be shown at a family-friendly couple of hours of television. And I was thrilled.

To be fair, it could have been anyone playing the Suns, and I hope that anyone bar the Suns win. Does this make me a bad fan of footy? Possibly. We’re witness to a bunch of first pick youngsters headed by established stars like Gary Ablett and Campbell Brown, there’s potential for some exciting football.

The sport could be a winner here but I’ll sit in my couch as a somewhat bitter fan, complaining to anyone that will listen about Karmichael Hunt getting a run, the Suns’ club song and the poaching that the Suns have done, with Greater Western Sydney waiting for their turn at the player skill-tester machine next year.

I just feel that the Suns and Greater Western Sydney aren’t necessary in the cosy AFL family that’s been created, especially with the concessions they’ve been granted.

And for now, I’m going to be that one annoying guy who complains about a team that I probably have no right to feel anything about.
