A-League All Stars game is a great idea

Lyall Gorman is currently kite-flying an A-League All Stars match as a season opener. One of the reasons this is a winning idea is the advantage football has over the AFL and NRL is an overseas player base.

Give or take a few, Australia currently has about 200 players overseas. We also have 43 from overseas playing in the A-League, not counting Kiwis players. Currently each club can have five overseas players.

Lyall wants to start the season with a starting match that is the signal that the season starts the week after.

His idea at this stage, is that the best overseas players playing in the A-League will take on the A-League’s best in a match. The match will be played in a centre that does not have an A-League team i.e. Canberra, Coffs Harbour or some other such venue.

He sees it as a ratings winner, the A-League Socceroos versus the A-League’s best overseas talent.

Lyall further argues it would give the Australia coach a good look at many fringe Socceroos. He believes that both the A-League coach and the All Stars coach should be coaching in the A-League.

The marketing is clever as it would highlight how much talent there is in the league and maybe some of the Euro snobs will watch.

Who would not go to see Kewell and Emerton versus Broich and Hernandez?

Wow, it would also highlight the best players in the league for fans and supporters.

I like the idea as it has an enormous appeal from every angle I can think of. Clubs, the players union and the players would need to agree.

The thought of a season-ending injury would weigh heavily on the minds of club administrators.

However, the water cooler talk about who should the coaches be, who should play in the game, and where to play it would be excellent for the game and provide some media during the AFLand NRL final series.

I hope this match does take place and the clubs and players can agree that this is a brilliant idea.
