Callan Ward and Rhys Palmer pose after the GWS press conference to announce the new player signings for the Greater Western Sydney Giants in 2012, Breakfast Point, Sydney.

This team assumes that GWS Giants will pick up certain players high in the AFL draft, which is a pretty safe bet considering they own picks 1-5,7, 9-11 and 13-14.

It’s my cut as to a starting side (forward to backs):

L. Power, I. Folau, J. Cameron,

D. Shiel, J. Patton, S. Clifton,

C. Ward, T. Scully, C. Wingard,

A. Kennedy, P. Davis, J. Hombsch,

M. Buntine, T. Mohr, C. Cornes,

D. Brogan (ruck), S. Coniglio, R. Palmer,

Backup ruck: J. Giles.

Yes, I’m putting Israel Folau at full forward. He is big, he is tall, he can jump and he can catch and he can kick straight.

Jonathon Patton of Eastern Ranges is the starting center-half forward. I’m putting him there rather than at full forward as I want two bigs up forward that demand accountability.

And – much as I love him – Izzy will get lost in any game plan more complicated than “stand near the big sticks, then lead to space when we both have the ball and come within 50 yards. Once you catch it, kick a goal.”

Brogan is in the ruck, backed by Jonathon Giles on the bench. Mids are Scully, Coniglio and Palmer with Ward, Shiel and Wingard ready to rotate through.

Phil Davis of Adelaide is at center-half back, while Tim Mohr of the Casey Scorpions is the fullback.

Chad Cornes is in a back pocket and Luke Power in a forward pocket, keeping an eye on the kids.

Hombsch, Cameron and Clifton get the nod through their NEAFL performances, while Buntine of the Dandenong Stingrays is covering athletic forwards from the back pocket.

Will this team win more than two or three games? Probably not.

But it’s a side that seems to have most of what you’d want in an AFL side, and with two genuine power forwards and a potentially tasty midfield, it could kick some game winning scores.
