Western Sydney Wanderers have released three players from their losing grand final side as they look ahead to next season’s A-League and Asian Champions League campaigns.

Coach Tony Popovic has repeatedly stressed the Wanderers need to continue to improve next season.

The former Socceroo showed on Tuesday he would not shy away from making the tough decisions in cutting four players who featured in the club’s stunning 2012/13 debut A-League campaign.

Forward Dino Kresinger, defender Tarek Elrich and midfielder Rocky Visconte, who all played in the Wanderers’ 2-0 grand final loss to Central Coast earlier this month have been released alongside forward Joey Gibbs.

Wanderers chief executive Lyall Gorman thanked the players for their contribution to the club’s first season.

“The inaugural season for the Western Sydney Wanderers has been an amazing journey for the players, coaching staff, club, partners and fans. Dino, Tarek, Joey and Rocky were all part of this journey and all played an integral part in the success of the club and winning the Premiers Plate in this historic season,” Gorman said in a statement on Tuesday.

“It’s unfortunate that we are unable to retain all of the squad.

“The Wanderers’ door will always be open to Dino, Tarek, Rocky and Joey and no one should ever underestimate their contribution to this, our foundation season. We wish them well in their future football endeavours.”

Kresinger, who developed a cult following at the fledgling club and scored in the Wanderers’ 2-0 semi-final win over defending champions Brisbane Roar, played 25 of the Wanderers’ 29 games and scored two goals.

Local junior Elrich played in 11 games, starting in two, while Visconte featured in three games and scored one goal.

Gibbs played 13 games and scored two goals.
