We turned the Sydney Cricket Ground into a baseball stadium, why can't the Yanks do the same for us? (Image: Javelin Australia).

The 2014 Major League Baseball season is set to begin in Sydney, with two games between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks to be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground next March.

The games, which are scheduled for March 22 and 23, will be the first MLB games ever played on Australian soil.

It is expected that the Sydney Cricket Ground surface would need to undergo a significant transformation to allow for an infield clay area, pitcher’s mound, dugouts and additional grandstand to be constructed.

The SCG does have a history with baseball – albeit a distant one – with the Chicago White Sox playing a combined NSW team at the ground in 1914.

News Limited are reporting that the games are expected deliver $13 million to the local economy.

The NSW Government are expected to formally make an announcement at the Sydney Opera House today.

More to come.
