Fairfax is reporting Darren Lehmann and tour selector Rod Marsh will bring Steve Smith into Australia’s batting line-up for the first Ashes Test, with David Warner set to miss out.
While ‘Boof’ Lehmann is not naming his squad until the coin toss, leaks from England suggest that Smith will bat at six, with Warner’s recent problems meaning he has had no match practice.
Smith scored 68 (no) and 43 in the final tour match against Worcestershire.
Lehmann’s opening pair will be Shane Watson and Chris Rogers, as previously indicated, with Warner missing the cut.
Ed Cowan is expected to shift to No.3, with Usman Khawaja missing out.
UPDATE: Late news is that Nathan Lyon may miss the cut, with Test debutant Ashton Agar to start for the Australians.
Agar, 19, if selector, would be a huge shock to Australia and even England.
The first Test against England starts at 8pm (AEST) at Trent Bridge – join us as we live blog the match and confirm both line-ups.
