Steve Smith has spent most of his short career disliked by the followers of Australian cricket.

He was unfairly labelled as Australia’s next superstar spinner. Many hoped he would fill a void that has been there since Shane Warne’s retirement.

When he made his Test debut he was 21 and he his promotion to the team came with huge expectations. His expected success was the main reason for him going into cricket exile when he did.

When Smith was picked in the touring party for the tour of India, it was met with a lot of responses suggesting he is not mature or skilled enough for Test level.

He proved everyone wrong when he made a fantastic 92 in Mohali. He battled against the spinners on a pitch that look similar to the surface at Roland Garos.

Smith was not originally part of the Australian team to tour the Old Dart, but impressed in the tour matches and was added to the tour group and was placed in the starting XI for Trent Bridge.

Smith’s knock of 89 showed maturity and secured his spot in the side for the rest of the series. He also gave great support to Clarke during another mammoth innings.

Smith is the pick of the young Australian batsman at the moment. His play against Swann yesterday was superb. He didn’t let then English spinner settle in, and constantly came down the track and rotated the strike beautifully.

Smith has been given a run in the team and it is now up to him to cement his position in the Test side.
