James Tamou’s immediate playing future is in doubt after he suffered a neck injury early in North Queensland’s 20-12 win over Canterbury on Saturday.
The NSW and Australian prop lay on the ANZ Stadium turf for several minutes after attempting an 18th minute tackle on James Graham and colliding with teammate Ashton Sims.
Tamou was rushed to hospital for scans with the club tweeting late Saturday night: “James Tamou has some “pins and needles affecting one arm and is awaiting scans”.
The Cowboys rejected suggestions Tamou had suffered a broken neck, a week after the rugby league community rallied to raise $1.4 million for Alex McKinnon in the Rise For Alex round.
Tamou’s injury took the gloss off an impressive win from the Cowboys, as they moved into the top eight for the first time since round 10.
“He has gone for precautionary scan and x-rays but I think it is not too bad,” Cowboys coach Paul Green said.
“Anything to do with that (the neck), everyone is pretty cautions about it.”
North Queensland captain Johnathan Thurston said he was concerned about Tamou’s condition.
“It doesn’t matter who the player is, when you see the replay he copped a whack to that neck area I was a little bit worried for him,” he said.
