Frenzied interest in Lance Franklin and a 12-game winning streak have translated into a record membership tally for AFL club Sydney.

The Swans announced on Thursday they had ticked past 40,000 members for the first time.

It means the club, who signed Franklin on a nine-year contract worth $10 million at the end of last season, comfortably topped the previous record of 36,358 set in 2013.

“Sydney remains the toughest sporting market in Australia and we recognise there is still a lot of work to be done, but we are delighted that the club continues to grow and is in a strong position both on and off the field,” Swans chief executive Andrew Ireland said in a statement.

The Swans, who host Essendon on Friday night, topped the ladder at the start of round 19.

Their last-start loss to Hawthorn ended a 12-match undefeated run, which equalled the club’s best streak.
