LOOKING FOR DAY 4? DAY 4 LIVE BLOG HERE

Australia had a virtually perfect first day at Lord’s, the only blip on the radar the dismissal of David Warner in the first session. Otherwise Australia wound up with 1/337 after 90 overs, Chris Rogers unbeaten on 158 and Steve Smith on 129.

It was a disappointing day for the hosts, as they missed out on numerous half chances and couldn’t keep the bowling accurate for long enough periods to really trouble Smith and Rogers.

Warner’s wicket fell in the first session, to the bowling of spinner Moeen Ali. It was a poor shot from Warner and making it even more disappointing was the fact that he had got over some tense moments early in his inning to begin playing freely.

The pitch of course didn’t help the English and it was a massive toss to win for Michael Clarke. However, he wouldn’t have been expecting such a good result from Day 1. The pitch for the next day or two of the match could only get better to bat on so the Australian side will need to keep amassing the runs early on Day 2.

The new ball for England is only 10 overs old and they will need to make the most of the first couple of overs whilst the ball has some shine on it. It could be a very long day for them if they don’t get a very early wicket or two. James Anderson will be the key and needs a big start to the day.

From an Australian point of view they will look to get themselves back in and then try and add quick runs throughout the day with the likes of Adam Voges, Mitchell Marsh and some big hitting bowlers down the order in Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell Starc and even Josh Hazelwood.

The question of the day seems to be about when Australia will declare their first innings unless England can completely reverse their fortunes from yesterday. The weather forecast says that there will be no rain, however it will be overcast all the way to the end of the game which will help with swing.

The pitch will on day four and five, no doubt become a tough one to bat on so Australia will want to build a massive first innings total. Depending on the way the day pans out a declaration some time either side of Tea seems to be the go if Australian can continue for that long.

In the meantime though, Australia’s batsmen will try and keep a solid rate of scoring and bat England right out of the game.
