Fraser-McGurk gets belated World Cup call-up - but there's a major catch
Big-hitter Jake Fraser-McGurk will go to the Twenty20 World Cup as a reserve batsman for the Australia squad. Fraser-McGurk's eye-catching IPL scoring has been…
South African opening bowler Dale Steyn brought up a special landmark, reaching 400 Test wickets by dismissing Pakistan opening batsman Tamim Iqbal in the second Test in Dhaka.
Dale is joint second-fastest to reach 400 wickets, equalling Sir Richard Hadlee’s 80 matches.
The 32-year-old has a bowling average of 22.55, a strike rate of 41.65 and an economy rate of 3.25. His best bowling figures are 7/51 and his best figures in a match are 11/60.
Steyn has taken an unbelievable 25 five-wicket hauls, and 10 or more wickets on five occasions.
The fiery quick joins an elite club of bowlers who have taken 400 or more Test wickets. He now sits at 13th on this list, only five wickets behind West Indian fast bowling legend Curtly Ambrose, and 10 wickets ahead of South African counterpart Makhaya Ntini.
Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan tops the list, taking 800 wickets in his 133-match Test career. Shane Warne is in second position, 92 wickets behind, then Indian leg-spinner Anil Kumble, another 89 wickets behind Warne.
Five spinners make up the top 20, including Indian Harbhajan Singh and New Zealander Daniel Vettori.
“I hope he gets to 500 wickets because that’s what he wants to do. That’s what he said to me and if he does, that will be stupendous,” Allan Donald told ESPNcricinfo.
If Steyn does manage to take another 100 scalps in his career, he will climb the list to sixth, 79 wickets ahead of South Africa’s great Shaun Pollock.
Only three current players are in the top 20, including Steyn. The other two are Englishman James Anderson, who is at 11th position at 412 wickets (trailing Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram by two), and Singh in ninth, with 416 wickets (five off equalling Shaun Pollock).
All three have to take over 300 wickets to catch Murali.
