Dragons fans were left fuming on Saturday night following two acts of foul play on their star playmaker in the one tackle.

With only six minutes left on the clock, Gareth Widdop’s attempted field goal was charged down. Upon diving on the bouncing ball, the Dragons’ maestro copped a set of knees into his exposed back courtesy of Frank Pritchard and a forearm to his head from Sam Kasiano.

The Dragons were clearly upset with the incident as players ran in from everywhere to form a melee.

Diplomatic captain Ben Creagh expressed his disappointment in the post match press conference. “I didn’t think it was in the spirit of the game… two 120 kg guys coming after a 90-kg five-eighth,” Creagh said, with coach Paul McGregor adding, “We all saw it. It was disappointing”.

The two acts marred a hard-fought golden point win by the Bulldogs. If either is to be suspended it will likely cost the Bulldogs their chance at the 2015 premiership, especially with their chief playmaker, Trent Hodkinson, already on the sideline.

Suspension will provide the only satisfaction to come from the match for the Dragons faithful, who having lost Benji Marshall and Joel Thompson to injury were calling for blood. However with only one send-off during the season, it was never going to happen in a semi-final.

The challenge for the match review committee will now be to determine whether the acts were deliberate. A suspension within the finals series is never taken lightly.

I would suggest Pritchard will lucky to don the guernsey next week, but Kasiano might escape punishment.
