Wright trade for Collingwood could see Jake of all trades switch

Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley got close, but was unfortunate to never feature in a premiership winning side as a player. Can he do it as a coach? (Slattery Images)

One team looks as though it’s going to be busy this trade period. Collingwood has already shown interest in Brisbane small midfielder James Aish, Greater Western Sydney midfielder Adam Treloar and ruck man Matthew Kreuzer.

But while interest has cooled on the injury-prone Kreuzer, Aish and Treloar both appear to still be on Collingwood’s radar.

There are a few other trades Collingwood could complete that could see some short-term pain but lead to a massive gain in the future.

Although coach Nathan Buckley called a Travis Cloke trade “laughable”, it wouldn’t be too bad to look at the possibilities. Gold Coast are about to lose their power forward Charlie Dixon and will be in need of another big body in the forward line.

Cloke kicked only 34 goals this year to accompany his 23 misses. His questionable accuracy and Collingwood’s forward line clog could be easily fixed with one trade – Peter Wright.

The 203cm forward/ruck could be a good trade for Cloke – Wright’s height, age and athleticism are massive pluses for the forward line. A problem for Collingwood is their ruck’s marking skills, Wright adds depth into the ruck and tall forward department.

However Wright’s age means his potential is just that – potential. To accompany Wright in a trade would be a first-round draft pick. The official trade could end up looking like Cloke, a late second-round pick for Wright and Gold Coast’s first-round draft pick.

This leaves Collingwood with two first-round picks. As Gold Coast’s pick is higher up the pecking order, Collingwood’s number seven draft pick would be traded to GWS for Treloar and maybe Curtly Hampton.

Another interesting trade would be seeing what Collingwood can get for a first-round pick. The new rule allowing clubs to trade draft picks one year into the future means Collingwood could trade their 2016 first-round pick and pick up another one by the end of the year.

Now Jake Carlisle has quit Essendon but being contracted means that a trade is required to acquire the 200cm swingman. Carlisle could easily be acquired for a first-round draft pick and, if needed, Ben Kennedy. The Collingwood Football Club is missing a real tall full back that can go toe-to-toe with forwards standing 200cm and over.

Now Carlisle might be a back-up, but with players like Ben Reid and Nathan Brown who seem to injure themselves a lot, Carlisle will play. Brown 27 by the end of the year, if his shoulder or knee gives way again it could be the end of his career. Carlisle could fit the role perfectly.
