Following the Springboks’ stunning upset loss to Japan in their Rugby World Cup opener, South Africa’s Sports Minister, Fikile Mbalula, had a stern message to send the players.

Mbalula stated that the Springboks risked becoming a “bunch of losers” and disclosed that he had called the head coach Heyneke Meyer to ensure he was focussed on the side recovering their pride.

“What I saw was not the Springboks I know. I phoned the coach and I told him we are a nation of fighters,” Mbalula said.

“Next game I want to see the Springboks otherwise they will be nothing else but a bunch of losers, who failed to represent the country when it counts.”

The Springboks chance for redemption will come against Samoa in the early hours of Sunday morning (Australian time).
