A better forecast for Thursday could allow some cricket to be played in the third and the final Test between Australia and the West Indies. You can follow all the action of the final day at the Sydney Cricket Ground from 10am (AEDT).

After the second successive day’s play was washed away by incessant rain, the game is all over bar the shouting. West Indies are stuck at 7/248 in their first innings, and unless there’s a flurry of declarations and forfeitures, the match looks certain to be doomed to a certain draw.

It’s tough to see what can be achieved even if there’s any play on the final day.

It will, obviously, need no further rain but what also needs to be seen is if the outfield is dry enough to resume play. Despite a decent drainage facility, the ground has taken a beating from this rain and it will be interesting to see if cricket can be played as soon as the rain stops.

What the two teams could look to do is to get their limited-overs specialists a chance bat or bowl, depending on their specialty. David Warner bats in a limited-overs mode anyway, but Steven Smith might consider promoting himself to the number three spot and also have Mitchell Marsh bat up the order.

West Indies will want their lower-order to wag a bit more and add to the Australian frustration but will then also want their bowlers to go flat out when it’s their chance. The weather, even if doesn’t rain, can be expected to remain overcast and that could aid their efforts.
