I don’t care what week of the year it is. I don’t care that it will cost him a grand final. Trent Cotchin must be banned for his collision with Dylan Shiel.

Cotchin’s decision to brace for impact with his shoulder makes it clear that his intention was to bump Dylan Shiel away from the contest rather than go directly for the ball.

That kind of action isn’t illegal in the AFL necessarily, but you do have a duty of care when you do so to not strike your opponent in the head.

Cotchin failed that duty of care. And while some would say that it is a minor incident and one that’s bound to happen in a contact sport, the AFL’s laws don’t see it this way.

The head has been sacred for a while now. We know what concussions can do to the human brain and it isn’t pretty, and it isn’t acceptable for them to be brushed off as no big deal.

Make no mistake, if this incident had occurred inside a home-and-away match it would certainly be cause for a one-week suspension, or at the very least a fine.

And a fine would do just fine for suspending Cotchin in this case, as he has already been given two this year and a third strike triggers an automatic one-week ban.

Is that fair? It’s a pretty rough call, but if Cotchin doesn’t want to miss games then he has to not put himself in this position to begin with, simple as that.

The AFL has to juggle many priorities as it attempts to manage the game and looks to achieve the best outcomes across the board.

But No.1 on that list of priorities has to be the same as it ought to be in any other business – the health and safety of its employees.

To let Cotchin play next week would be a violation of that principle, saying that other aspects of the game are more important than whether or not Dylan Shiel is able to think straight in twenty years time.

    Do the right thing, AFL.

We all know what Cotchin meant to do, but The Narrative will get him off, even though he successfully removed one of the Giants’ most important players from the game.

That is correct, we all do really know why he went in after the ball like that and that’s why he should go.

We being anyone that is struggling to come to grips with Richmond making a grand final perhaps. For you to know what Cotchin meant to do you would have to be a mind reader. Are you a mind reader? Didn’t think so

Good luck to Richmond although my Grandfather spent his youth throwing rocks at Richmond people across Victoria parade from Collingwood, however you dont need to be a mind reader to work out what Cotchin is thinking, the visuals explain it perfectly.

A desperate act in a finals game, however it is outside the rules – clearly outside.

And here’s me thinking that anyone that would spend time on a sports forum writing comments about his grandad throwing rocks at Richmond people may have just lost any credibility he may have had. The personal insults shows you’re under pressure so have a sit down, gather your thoughts and then respond with more dribble. You’re great entertainment

I dont mind Richmond, great place at the Royal or London Tavern for a beer and some of my best friends barrack for them.

We all love football, but sniper boy Cotchin is no Captain blood, nor should he try to be, it seems his football as time has gone by has reduced to low brow desperation tactics.

Here is a tip for him, try to play some decent football instead of trying to emulate Captain blood with so called Captain courageous tactics.

If the AFL has any credibility left he should go.

The problem is for you TC123, is that you are blinded by whom you barrack for, no crime in that of course, but objectivity is not your friend.

TC123 did Cotchin dip his shoulder and tuck in his elbow or not? That’s the only issue to be decided. Only the blind or hopelessly one-eyed see Cotchin has no case to answer.

Sloane front on contact to Dangerfield. Braced for hit. Hit Dangerfield in head who from visuals was momentarily knocked out. Australian obsession in everything at moment to over govern. Coaching was not intentional. Stain on the game if he is rubbed out. Ginsberg had a black swollen eye….Ned to check the tapes and rub more players out.

As you say, Nick, he should be suspended, but I kinda hope he isn’t! Cotchin certainly hit him in the head and by the rules should go (careless contact, high impact). On the other hand, he looked to be going hard at the ball, which I like to see, and I’m going for the Tigers this year, so I’d really prefer him to be playing. Morals vs emotions…

If Green had knocked out Dusty, you would be squealing like a stuck pig and rightly so

Cotchin not only was reckless, he has form as a gutless little sniper.

There you go again with the gutless comment. There was as much chance of Cotchin being injured and missing the GF. I’m not sure who you follow and don’t really care but they could do with a few gutless players like Cotchin. You assume that tiger supporters would be squealing like pigs if Dusty was injured in the same fashion. Wrong again. I’d be happy that Dusty and his dad could sit down and watch the final together. That would be nice

Cotchin has form, i would go as far as calling him gutless, anyone can attack a man going the ball, that is not courage.

You obviously can’t identify when someone who is actually going for the ball, nor can you comprehend that someone can go for the ball while trying to knock their opponent out of the way at the same time.

Your sniping captain has been caught out choosing to bump and hit a bloke high.
Unfortunately that decision resulted in a concussion and most likely influenced the outcome of a preliminary final and in turn a GF berth.

We’ve had tripping and kicking in danger for a long time; and ‘sliding in’ and endangering the head for long enough. Players know when they are going to arrive late, and they need to know that entails a duty of care.

The old days are gone, whether we like it or not. Personally, I never liked seeing a player taken out. The vast majority of players themselves don’t like to see it. If it’s the opposing team taking advantage of play to hurt their team mate, they make it clear. If it’s a player on their own side at fault, team solidarity makes it difficult to remonstrate. The only players who approve are those who dish it out, and they are few in number. Fans likewise.

While Cotchin was not being a bovver boy, he acted without due care. He went for the player first. He concussed Shiel, as that player squatted dazedly for some time.

This rule is critical for the well being of players, not to mention fairness inthe game. Cotchin gets a week.

Big name player, big club, grand final week. The MRP will find a way to say the head high contact was incidental and below minimum force and that the bulk of the blow was legal. Shiel’s head was down, but over the ball, so that’s not an excuse any other week (for most players).
On precedent (which the MRP have stated they do not use) clearly a week. With MRP rule flexibility, nothing to see here.
