It being the final game of the groups stage for both nations, this match will be played concurrently with the game between Croatia and Iceland, and both games can potentially have an effect on the other.
Here’s the situation currently:
Croatia are through to the Round of 16. Having scored wins already over both Nigeria and Argentina, they’ve got six points to their name, so there’s simply no way they’ll miss out.
They’re a virtual certainty to finish top of the group also – Nigeria are the only team in the group that could catch them, and would need to win this match something like 5-0 to do so.
Every other nation in the group however still has a chance at making it through to the Round of 16 – it all depends on how these matches play out.
Nigeria are in the best position, thanks to having a win over Iceland. If they win this match, they’re through. If they draw, they’re probably through unless Iceland beat Croatia by three goals.
Iceland on the other hand need to hope that first of all they beat Croatia, and second of all Argentina beats Nigeria but not by more than the Icelanders win by. Tricky equation.
As for Argentina, they need to win this one and then hope that Croatia either draws with or beats Iceland – anything else and it could come down to tiebreakers.
Prediction
The balance of probability is that the Argies and Croatia both win, and Argentina and Messi go through to the Round of 16. But things haven’t worked out so logically for the World No.5 side so far this tournament, nothing’s set in stone.
Argentina 2-0.
