Wallabies star Taniela Tupou has been cited for alleged foul play in the loss to the Brumbies, putting him in doubt for the weekend’s clash against the NSW Waratahs.

UPDATE: THE REDS HAVE REJECTED AN EARLY GUILTY PLEA AND WILL FIGHT THIS AT THE JUDICIARY

SANZAAR said in a statement that the incident happened at the 18:40 mark of the Reds’ 16-12 defeat.

At that moment, Tupou put his full force into a clean out on Brumbies flanker Jahrome Brown, sending his rival flying. The referee saw nothing wrong at the time and Queensland got a penalty soon after.

Stan commentator, former Wallaby Justin Harrison, called it an “effective cleanout” in a replay of the incident.

“It’s an effective cleanout, look at the reaction of Jahrome Brown afterwards as Taniela Tupou puts every kilo and gram of his bodyweight into that cleanout, hitting shoulder first, not direct contact with the head. [Brown’s] not interested in a breakdown for the next four phases and that’s the effectiveness of arriving with physicality.”

SANZAAR said in the statement: “Taniela Tupou of the Reds has been cited for alleged foul play during a Super Rugby Pacific match at the weekend.

“Tupou is alleged to have contravened Law 9.20 Dangerous play in a ruck or maul, during the match between the Brumbies and Reds at GIO Stadium in Canberra on 18 March 2022.

“Upon further review of the match footage, the Citing Commissioner deemed in his opinion the incident had met the Red Card threshold for foul play.

“The Case is to be considered in the first instance by the SANZAAR Foul Play Review Committee which will take place on Monday 21 March 2022, 6pm (AEDT), via video-conference.

“All SANZAAR disciplinary matters are in the first instance referred to the Foul Play Review Committee to provide the option of expediting the judicial process.

“For a matter to be dispensed with at this hearing, the person appearing must plead guilty and accept the penalty offered by the Foul Play Review Committee.”
