Maroons forward Tom Gilbert and Blues centre Tom Trbojevic are definitely out while clubs are checking up on a long line of injured players after Wednesday night’s bruising State of Origin opener in Adelaide.

Gilbert was already due to be rested by the Dolphins this weekend but will be out for at least a month after dislocating his shoulder while making a tackle midway through the first half of Queensland’s 26-18 win.

His club and state teammate, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, was also not selected by coach Wayne Bennett for the Redcliffe side’s trip to Auckland to face the Warriors on Saturday.

Trbojevic was assessed with a category-one concussion after being hit high by Tom Flegler so he will be subject to the NRL’s 11-day stand-down period, meaning he won’t play next Friday against the Dolphins after Manly’s bye this round.

Man of the match Reuben Cotter was charged for a crusher tackle on Thursday morning and Flegler was pinged with a grade-two careless offence for his sin bin hit on Trbojevic but both will avoid bans by being fined 10-13% percentage of their match fee.

Murray Taulagi failed to finish the match due to a head knock so he is unlikely to suit up for the Cowboys on Sunday against Melbourne in Townsville while his fellow Queensland winger Selwyn Cobbo injured his hip late in the game so Brisbane will likely bring Corey Oates in for him when they head to Shark Park on Saturday night.

Blues advisor Greg Alexander on Thursday morning said he expected the Blues picked for club duty this weekend to all back up.

Club affected by Origin representation have been allowed to choose extra players to cover potential absences.

Penrith had six players line up at Adelaide Oval on Wednesday night for the series opener after Stephen Crichton was brought in to start at centre following Latrell Mitchell‘s calf strain.

They have chosen a 24-man squad and have the luxury of Izack Tago (pectoral), Spencer Leniu (ruptured testicle) and Matt Eisenhuth (shoulder) ready to make returns from injury as cover for their Origin stars.

Their opponents, St George Illawarra, have not picked veteran forward Jack Bird after he experienced knee soreness and he is likely to miss at least another week before returning.

Tigers hooker Api Koroisau is likely to line up against Canberra on Friday night, 48 hours after playing 80 minutes for NSW in the State of Origin series opener. Tim Sheens named Koroisau to start but will wait until his captain arrives back at Tigers HQ before locking in the selection decision.

“He wants to play,” Sheens said. “I’m not sure until we see him exactly what we’re going to do there.”

NSW’s 19th man Stefano Utoikamanu flew back from Adelaide in time for the Tigers’ captain’s run and will start in the front row as planned.

Canberra have gone ahead with their plan to rest captain Jarrod Croker from this Friday’s trip to Campbelltown and despite the move dividing opinion, coach Ricky Stuart is adamant he’s not disrespecting the Wests Tigers.

“It’s not nothing to do with who we play, it’s not being disrespectful … it’s for the whole community of Canberra,” he said on Thursday. “It’s about looking after Jarrod and making a decision where I think the community can get right behind one of our favourite sons.

“It’s a decision I’ve made for Jarrod from a physical point of view … (and) for the team in regards to where we’re at at the moment. I don’t feel like we’ve weakened the team, I feel we’re in a really good position from a whole organisation point of view going into next weekend.”

Canberra forward Corey Harawira-Naera also won’t be suiting up on Friday but is hoping to return to the field as soon as possible after being discharged from hospital on Sunday following his mid-game seizure.

It’s been speculated the Raiders will give Harawira-Naera at least a month off playing, Stuart stating he was “not really concerned” about a return to playing at this early stage. “I spoke to him yesterday about when he could just get back to doing a little bit of physical activity, probably next week he can start doing a little bit of light training just to get back into normal routine.”

Raiders winger Nick Cotric paid a $3000 fine for a shoulder charge against Souths rather than risk a two-game ban by challenging the judiciary.

Rabbitohs fullback Blake Taaffe ($1000 for a high tackle), Broncos prop Xavier Willison ($1000 for dangerous contact), Dragons stand-in skipper Jack de Belin ($1800 for a cannonball tackle) and Dolphins veteran Kodi Nikorima ($1800 for a high tackle) have also avoided bans despite being charged.

Taaffe avoiding suspension for his hit on Raiders winger Jordan Rapana is a relief for the Bunnies given that Latrell Mitchell has been ruled out of Origin with a calf strain so he is unlikely to be available this Saturday against the Titans who will be without five-eighth Kieran Foran.

He is out with a foot injury so Jayden Campbell switches to fullback with Keano Kini lining up at fullback. .

Manly centre Tolu Koula ($1000 for a high shot on Kalyn Ponga) and Knights hooker Phoenix Crossland ($1800 for dangerous contact) were also fined in the only two charges from Sunday’s games.
