Melbourne star Steven May has raised the ire of Collingwood supporters by claiming the Demons ‘should have smoked’ the Magpies in their qualifying final clash.

The Dees had a remarkable 69 inside 50s to 37, but an inefficient and inaccurate forward line proved costly, managing just seven goals to lose to the Pies by seven points.

The match proved a turning point in the finals series, with Collingwood going on to win two more thrilling finals over GWS and Brisbane to claim premiership glory, while the Dees again squandered a winning position to lose their semi final to Carlton by just two points to slump out of September in straight sets for the second straight year.

Speaking at the club’s best and fairest function, a candid May, who finished fifth in the count behind eventual winner Christian Petracca, admitted the way the Demons’ season finished ‘f–king hurts’.

“We lose to Collingwood, and they go on to win the flag, and it f–king hurts; because we’re a better team than them, we should have smoked them,” May said.

“And to sit there on grand final day and watch them hoist the cup, and get the medals, I’m sitting there going ‘Jeez, our team’s so much better than these guys’. We should’ve been out there, but we weren’t.

“We’ve got an unbelievable list, an unbelievable coaching group, and the hunger has never been hungrier.”

Vision of May’s speech surfaced on social media on Sunday after being posted by X user ‘Lace Out’, with the response from Collingwood supporters predictably harsh.

May has since been forced to hospital after suffering an allergic reaction on a night out with partner Sachi Dade.
