Premiership-winning Panthers hooker Mitch Kenny has claimed trolls grabbed his phone after a post suggesting he was involved in drug use went viral.

An Instagram story on Kenny’s account was posted with the caption “Couple Boxing Day lines have got me in troubleeee” and a screenshot was circulated, raising questions about what he had been up to.

But the Penrith star took to social media hours later to say “Happy New Year guys. Enjoy and ignore trolls who grabbed my phone. Happy New Year.”

An NRL spokesperson has confirmed the Integrity Unit would liaise with Penrith over the incident before determining whether the player should face any sanctions.

Kenny has started at hooker in Penrith’s past two Grand Final wins and the 25-year-old is off contract at the end of next season.

Cowboys star Valentine Holmes was banned for a Test after the Kangaroos winger was fined $25,000 by the NRL for posting an image on social media in September of him holding a small bag containing white powder.

Holmes, who had already been sidelined for the final four games of North Queensland’s season due to a high-tackle ban, claimed it was a prank gone wrong but the NRL found he had “engaged in conduct which has brought the game and his club into disrepute” by publicly associating the game with illegal drugs.
