Braydon Trindall has been stood down from the Cronulla Sharks after failing an alcohol and drug test while driving on a suspended licence.

The five eighth has been charged with drink driving while holding a suspended licence and has had a secondary drug test sent for further examination.

The Sharks confirmed via statement on Tuesday that he failed initial roadside alcohol and illicit drug tests early on Monday morning.

“The club has since followed the appropriate protocols within the player’s contract and CBA and continues to work with the NRL integrity unit, with the club, player and his management agreeing it is in Braydon’s best interest to not participate in games or to train for the short term, most importantly to attend to his welfare and health issues,” the statement read.

“Trindall reported the result of the roadside tests immediately to Sharks management, who in turn informed the NRL integrity unit.

“The matter has been referred for a court appearance in May where Trindall will face the allegations and charges levelled against him, noting that a secondary sample of the illicit drug test is yet to be confirmed.

“The Sharks treat these issues extremely seriously, however they are providing Trindall with the necessary welfare support.”

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Trindall was tested on Monday morning, just hours after his team’s victory over the North Queensland Cowboys at PointsBet Stadium. He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

He is currently prohibited from driving after having his licence suspended for other offences.

The Herald said it was alleged that the roadside drug test also showed cocaine was in his system, but that Trindall was awaiting the results from an oral fluid test for a more accurate result.
