Wellington Phoenix will welcome Brisbane Roar to McDonald Jones Stadium in the first-ever A-League doubleheader in Newcastle as both sides look to get their runs of form back on track.
Join The Roar for live scores and commentary, from 4:05pm (AEDT).
Wellington were part of a wonderous game against Western Sydney, with the Wanderers edging out the Phoenix 4-3 after a late Tomer Hemed equaliser was called offside by VAR.
However, Wellington can take many positives from the clash, with their passing and movement in possession confusing the Wanderers defence on many occasions.
Reno Piscopo has excelled so far this season, acting as a consistent creative outlet. His assist to Ulises Davila for the opener showed his playmaking ability, technique and game awareness, with his first touch taking him away from his marker.
Meanwhile, Brisbane Roar have stalled after their early run of form, not winning since the sixth of February and taking just three points out of 18 in their last six games.
Interestingly, the expected goals metric shows Brisbane have been overperforming as well.
While having scored 13 so far this season, they have an xG of 10.1. Despite having conceded just eight goals, their expected conceded sees them with 10.4 xGA. So, realistically, Brisbane should be on a goal difference of between zero and minus one.
Wellington are looking as if they may be back on track to push for a finals position, showing improvements in intensity, ball movement and in general around the field.
For this reason, and Brisbane’s struggles, I believe the current relocated Wellington side will have enough to secure victory, winning 2-0.
