Outrageous from the Aussie at the Byron Nelson tournament!
American Phil Mickelson held his nerve on a dramatic final day of the PGA Championship to become the oldest major men’s golf winner in history.
Mickelson who is about to turn 51 turned back the clock and held off his much younger compatriots to win by two strokes from South African Louis Oosthuizen and American Brooks Koepka.
Mickelson carded a +1 73 on the final day to finish at -6. It was enough on a course that had few birdie opportunities with the strong winds picking up off the Atlantic Ocean.
Before the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island’s brutal Ocean course, Mickelson was ranked 115th in the world and no one gave him a chance in the star-studded field.
Mickelson’s win at 50 tops the previous oldest major winner Julius Boros who won the 1968 PGA Championship aged 48 years and 4 months.
It was Mickelson’s second PGA Championship win and sixth major in total.
The only major missing on the left-hander’s resume remains the US Open and this win will give the fan favourite renewed confidence that he still has a chance to complete the career grand slam.
