Kellie Finlayson is not only inspiring her husband Jeremy to keep performing at his best for Port Adelaide in the AFL arena, she’s doing likewise with millions of Australians for her amazing job raising awareness about bowel cancer.
The 27-year-old has stage-four colorectal cancer after being diagnosed two years ago but, in an interview with The Advertiser, she revealed that her chemotherapy had worked “unbelievably well”.
“After all the chemotherapy I had, they did a CAT scan … all the scans and they came back with no activity,” she said.
“What that means is that if there is cancer in there, it’s dormant which means it’s not spreading, which is obviously fantastic.
“If it means that I‘m here to see my daughter go to school for the first day or go to her 21st, that’s not something I thought I’d have three months ago.”
The Finlaysons, who have a daughter Sophia who is nearly two, are raising awareness about the need for people to get treatment early if they think they have any bowel problems.
Kellie said there is a 97% survival rate when bowel cancer is detected early.
She now has more than 35,000 Instagram followers and she signs off her posts with “Check your poo xoxo”.
“If I save one person’s life …” she said of what gives her the strength to tell her story.
“It’s easier spoken about than hidden away.”
Jeremy beamed with pride when asked about his wife’s efforts.
“She gets messages every day from young girls who say she’s saved their lives,” he said.
“It’s truly amazing and I couldn’t be more proud.”
