Western Sydney Wanderers will be out to extend their A-League record winning streak to ten tonight when they head south to meet Melbourne Heart. We’ll have live scores and minute-by-minute updates from 5.30pm AEDT.
After the high of moving into top spot after beating Central Coast 1-0 the week before, Western Sydney were always a chance to have a let-down performance against last-placed Wellington.
And so it was. The A-League leaders needed two penalties – one from Shinji Ono and one from Mark Bridge – to overcome the Phoenix 2-1.
In truth, the Wanderers were a little sluggish and were within inches of conceding in the final minutes of the game, after Jeremy Brockie’s magnificent swivel-volley crashed against Ante Covic’s crossbar.
They’ll be tested again tonight when they face a Melbourne Heart side playing to keep their season alive, and Tony Popovic’s men will be without the services of Shinji Ono, who will miss with a
Melbourne Heart had a chance to move back into the top six with a win on Monday night against an out-of-form Adelaide United, but they were turned over 2-0 after some wasteful finishing.
Consistent, week-in week-out performances have evaded John Aloisi’s team this season and most would find it hard to argue that the Heart don’t deserve to make the finals.
But the fact is that a win tonight would allow the Heart to move back into the six, if only momentarily.
Western Sydney have been far from their best in the past three matches and if it continues they might find themselves on the losing end soon.
