NRL News: Cashed-up Roosters enter race for Fifita, Cleary wants compo for raid on Panther cubs
The Sydney Roosters are trying to swamp Penrith's attempt to sign David Fifita by offering the Gold Coast star a four-season deal reportedly worth…
Wins to the Sydney Swans, NSW Waratahs and Penrith Panthers on the weekend mean that Sydney currently holds a clean sweep of top spot across the three major footballing codes.
The Swans delivered their 11th straight victory with a 79 to 51 victory over the West Coast Eagles, taking the club to outright first on the competition ladder.
The Waratahs have now taken out the Super Rugby minor premiership after their 44-16 win over the Highlanders. They currently sit seven points clear of both the Sharks and the Crusaders with one game remaining.
Over in the NRL, Sydney teams occupy the top five positions on the ladder, with the aforementioned Panthers topping the Sea Eagles and Bulldogs on points differential.
At the start of each respective season, the odds were long for each of the current table toppers to be where they are. The Panthers were tipped to scrape into the bottom half of the eight, while the Swans were seen as potential top four candidates. As for the perennially underachieving Tahs, that was anybody’s guess.
Although there is a long way to go in all three competitions, the Harbour City looks like it will feature heavily comes finals time.
This after a second successful season for the Western Sydney Wanderers, who have played in two straight deciders. This included one campaign that ended with a minor premiership.
You could also cheekily add the success of the victorious NSW Origin Team, the majority of which is made up of Sydney-based players.
Even the struggling Cronulla Sutherland Sharks managed a win over their more highly fancied Brisbane opponents last Friday Night.
For the first time in history, a Sydney side may take out the title across the three major footballing codes, which would surely mean Sydney is once again the sporting capital of Australia.
Sorry Melbourne.
