Controversial Cronulla NRL forward Andrew Fifita has thrown his support behind Matthew Lodge, after the former Wests Tigers’ player was hit with a string of charges in New York.
Lodge posted $50,000 bail on Tuesday and was released from New York’s notorious Rikers Island jail complex.
The 20-year-old Junior Kangaroo from Sydney has been charged with burglary in the first degree, which carries a minimum sentence of five years’ jail and a maximum of 25 years.
Lodge, who also faces domestic violence-related allegations in NSW, has been sacked by the Tigers over the incident.
On his Instagram account on Tuesday, Fifita posted his support for Lodge.
“Thinking of you Brother
#Family #alwaysWillBe #weseethegood #loveyabrother #headup @matt_lodge” Fifata wrote next to a collage of photos of him and Lodge together.
The post soon grabbed the attention of the media, which drew the ire of Fifita.
“I guess the media have no story’s lol ? Like I said @matt_lodge is Family
#loveyabrother #dontcare” he wrote.
Fifita has not been without his own recent troubles.
He was banned for six matches towards the end of the NRL season and fined $30,000 for abusing a junior rugby league referee at Penrith.
