Billabong Pro organisers were forced to call a lay day at Teahupoo on Saturday as monster swells of up to seven metres lashed the famous Tahitian break.
The Tahitian government issued a ‘code red’ over the entire Tahitian coastline, shutting down all marinas and ports as well as banning most craft from entering into the water.
Many of the WCT surfers remained on the shoreline as spectators in the heavy conditions, with current World No. 1 Joel Parkinson and former world champion Mick Fanning labelling the conditions “crazy”.
Despite the government alert, seasoned big-wave specialists such as Koby Abberton and Bruce Irons braved one of the most intense swells ever witnessed at Teahupoo, electing to tow in when paddling-in was rendered impossible.
Equally as brave were the video crews who also summoned the courage to venture out, providing us with footage of some of the best waves ever ridden at the break.
Surprisingly, most of the madmen that chose to take on the walls of water escaped serious injury, with a local riders suffering a broken leg while Australian Dean Morrison broke his foot on his first wave of the session.
