Just seven rounds of football separate the present day from the NRL finals, with the picture looking clearer by the day in some areas and cloudier in others.

The top four are looking pretty comfortable, while you’d be a brave man to bet against the Sea Eagles staying in the eight but, beyond that, things look dicey.

Can the sixth-place Eels be trusted to maintain their spot for another two months? Will Penrith fall back into old habits if their stunning winning streak comes to an end? Can Newcastle outrun the plethora of teams breathing down their neck?

We examined the run home on the Game of Codes podcast with Roar NRL expert AJ Mithen, looking at which teams safe, which teams could fall out and who’s the best chance of sliding in.

This week looks especially crucial too, with the finals hopes of up to three sides going on the line.

Listen to the discussion:

If the season ended today…
QF: Melbourne vs Canberra
QF: South Sydney vs Sydney
EF: Manly vs Newcastle
EF: Parramatta vs Penrith
