Australia might hold the upper hand in the third Ashes Test, but their job of retaining the urn is far from complete as England look to hit back on Day 3 at Headingley. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 8pm (AEST).
The Australians went into yesterday’s action right on the back foot, having been skittled in their first innings for 179, but by the end of a staggering day which saw 16 wickets fall, they were right back ahead in the match and holding all of the cards.
It was the bowlers who did it for them. While the sun was out and the conditions were better for batting, the pitch had just enough in it for bowlers who wanted to be patient and nibble around in the right areas.
Josh Hazlewood was the pick as he took five wickets, but England weren’t helped along by some horrendous shot options, as they eventually got rolled for 67.
Joe Denly, who scored 12, was the only man who made it into double figures, but now holds the unwanted record of lowest top score in a completed English innings in the history of Test cricket.
Finding themselves behind by 112 runs, England’s bowlers had to be good, and while they took some early wickets, it was Marnus Labuschagne who controlled Australia into a position of power.
The replacement for the prolific Steve Smith finished the day with 53 not out, and with Matthew Wade able to add 33 as well in an important partnership, Australia will resume on 6 for 171, giving them a lead of 283.
With so much time left in the game, Australia will want every run possible, and while Labuschagne is at the crease, he now needs to be supported by the tail as the tourists attempt to push up towards and beyond 300.
England are frankly in all sorts, but given the pitch isn’t doing heaps and Australia bowled about as good as they possibly could have yesterday, they would still be confident of chasing a total, particularly because, at this stage, Nathan Lyon won’t be as large of a threat.
England must get the remaining wickets in a timely manner on Day 3 though and find themselves chasing under 300, before getting a really good start with the bat.
Rory Burns may well hold the key, while the role of Jason Roy and Joe Root, who have both been out of form at the top of the order, will be crucial, because a good start is an absolute must if they are going to hunt down a score.
