Christmas has come early. These two old foes have already played once this year for a thrilling 16-16 draw in Wellington.
The Springboks went on to win the Rugby Championship and claim some silverware. Now they get it on again.
This should be some entertaining match-up so early in the tournament. I’d tip these two to meet again in the final.
The All Blacks are gunning for their third World Cup crown in a row. No country has ever won three World Cups on the bounce.
South Africa, winners in 1995 and 2007, have their own designs on the William Webb Ellis trophy.
The Boks come into the tournament in great form. They beat Japan 41-7 in their last match and are undefeated in their past five games.
They have knocked off Argentina twice and Australia in 2019. Coach Rassie Erasmus is doing an excellent job.
Handre Pollard and Faf de Klerk will lead them around the park. Willie Le Roux has been named at fullback, while Jesse Kriel has missed out on a starting spot in the centres.
South Africa will field a monster pack with Duane Vermeulen, Pieter-Steph du Toit and Eben Etzebeth.
The All Blacks have gone with Beauden Barrett at fullback and Richie Mo’unga at number 10. Sonny Bill Williams has been picked on the bench.
Brodie Retallick has been left out with a shoulder injury, so Scott Barrett starts with Sam Whitelock in the second-row.
Prediction
Little separates these two great rivals. South Africa have been improving, while there are some doubts about the All Blacks after their poor Rugby Championship. Of course, you write off the Kiwis at your own peril.
