This has been a 3 year period to forget for the A league and the GF reflects that. I’m optimistic that the new season will see the start of an upwards swing. Sydney FC will move back to their shiny new stadium in Moore Park, hopefully as life starts to return to something that looks more familiar, more fans will have the confidence to head back to the stands and Paramount will sort our their streaming service. We’ll also be on the countdown for the first senior WC on our soil 🙂

The A-League Men grand final might be the decider football actually needs

While there are massive issues with player development, the fact is 10 of our points in this phase came against the bottom 2 teams and only 1 out of a possible 12 against Saudi and the worst Japanese team in recent memory. With that form line, our insipid performances and Arnold still in charge, we are no hope of qualifying and any serious football nation would already have a replacement lined up.

Pressure mounts on Arnold as Socceroos lose again

I think with the amount of insane and incorrect comments he makes about our team’s performance, hard to see how any players could have any faith in him.

Pressure mounts on Arnold as Socceroos lose again

The only positive from this result is that it resolves the moral dilemma I have about watching the slave built Qatari world cup, with the Socceroos extremely unlikely to qualify ( can’t see us beating either Japan or Saudi, let alone the 5th place South American side). I haven’t watched this game or even bothered with the highlights. I can’t recall the last time I did not at least watch the highlights of a Socceroos WCQ. Agree with all the comments about the rise of Asia, Australia’s development issues, but I reckon you could get any semi- competent leader/manager from any other sport, or mid sized public service department or private company and they would get more out of this squad than Arnold.

Socceroos' World Cup hopes take hit after Oman draw

Like many football fans, COVID has been the main reason I have not attended games the past couple of years. In time the crowds will return, particularly if the football played by Newcastle the other night is on display. This league is one for young players, with fitness and hunger, balanced with a few older heads to guide them around. Looking forward to Macarthur v Newcastle this weekend, hopefully at the ground.

A flying Newcastle Jets are the best thing about the new A-Leagues season

Love hearing more about our Australian football history! thanks for sharing.

Joe Davidson: Australia’s early black football star

If we scrape through to the play offs, I reckon FFA should headhunt the very best coach who says yes to a part time socceroos gig up to and including the WC if we make it. If you recall this was the deal with Hiddink, he got to continue his day job with PSV. Surely there’d be a number of top level coaches interested in going to a WC (while keeping their day job) willing to see us thru the play offs and wc (while the club comps are on hold). Klopp? Guardiola? Bielsa?maybe even Celtic’s new manager?

'Sloppy' Roos drop points against China, leaving World Cup bid reeling

I woke up at 2am and thought about getting up to watch the game. Then I remembered that Arnold is still the coach and decided to stay in bed. Good choice. Yes we do not have many top shelf players right now, but Arnold has them underperforming as a team and in his interviews does not come across as very bright to me. Can’t imagine he inspires much confidence with the players if his interviews are indicative of how he speaks to the players. You’d hope at the very least that FFA are scoping out coaching alternatives (assuming we manage to hold onto 3rd spot).

'Sloppy' Roos drop points against China, leaving World Cup bid reeling

I feel Arnold’s approach is a throw back to the pre Guus era, an era where it was all about effort and desire, with little regard to tactics or coaching the players to play modern football. The persistence with a long ball throw almost every time frustrates me no end. We do have some gifted players, not world beaters, but good enough to have more than one approach. I can’t see us making the top 2 at this rate, saudis are in a strong position and Japan are not going to drop many more points. Let’s just hope the continental play off is not against the south american confederation.

MATCH REPORT: Arnie says Saudi 'time wasting' frustrated Socceroos in bad tempered World Cup clash

Despite the loss, how refreshing was it to see Ange’s coaching, lots of movement, intelligent runs. Such a contrast to the dross served up by Arnie at the Olympics, with the stoke ball long throws as the main attacking weapon. Please come home someday Ange!

Ange's Celtic fall just short in Aussie's first big marquee night in Scottish football

Someone suggested Stajic on the match day thread. I’ve no idea what the issues were that led to his sacking as Matilda’s coach, but he performed a minor miracle with the mariners this season and has plenty of international experience. Plus he’d be affordable. I think we should persist with local coaches. No point spending up big on a foreign coach with the cattle we have and cheaper foreign options a la Pim and Holger are really no better than what we have.

Are you 'Arnie In' or 'Arnie Out' when it comes to Australia's national teams?

not a great statistic, in fairness, while not as high a level, we did win the Asian Cup.

Are you 'Arnie In' or 'Arnie Out' when it comes to Australia's national teams?

I think the ‘Arnold out” calls are a sense of frustration, in reality we don’t have enough top quality players, no matter the coach. However, hard to imagine Ange resorting to having your only specialist centre forward continually taking ineffective long throws, when he should be in the box trying to you know, actually have a shot at goal. For all of Arnie’s big talk, as at the 2019 Asian Cup, when it really matters, he is all show and no go.

Thanks for posting Nick, the spain v egypt highlights confirmed what I saw in the argentina v egypt game. On the few occasions that Egypt got near/in the opposition box they generally look pretty clueless and toothless. Obviously they can defend, but being forced to go for a win will surely open up some space for our boys 🙂

Huge effort, but there was no real Plan B against Spain's A-Team

As other’s have mentioned, Spain’s press was so intense and unrelenting, they simply did not allow us to play more football. The defending was outstanding and regardless of how the Olyroos do in the Olympics, we now have at least 4-5 players capable of stepping up to the Socceroos in the WCQ’s. Finally, Egypt were very average in their game against Argentina, i back our boys to dominate and beat them.

Huge effort, but there was no real Plan B against Spain's A-Team

Was also impressed with Watts’ ability to draw fouls from the Argies, soaking up time and causing them to get frustrated and lose their composure.

Cancelling my Kayo subscription this afternoon was a sweet feeling. Bye bye Murdoch

A new broadcast deal is fantastic news for the A-League

i just did some professional training on childhood trauma and i’d say the extreme poverty he grew up in might have had a bit to do with his later addiction issues.

Diego Maradona dies aged 60

If you haven’t watched it, check out the Asif Kapadia documentary film ‘Maradona’. I recently watched it on Amazon Prime. The most amazing archival footage of the most amazing footballer I have seen in my lifetime. A sad day for football fans, RIP Diego.

Diego Maradona dies aged 60

I’m one of the people who cancelled their foxtel last year after having it for the last 15 years simply for the a league. My reasons for cancelling were varied, but included not wanting to give murdoch any more money and having too many things on over summer that stopped me watching games. Since the COVID restart, i signed up to the Myfootball app (only downside is you can only watch on your phone). Like many football fans, I don’t watch, have no interest in AFL, NRL Rugby and really hope that we switch to a winter comp, broadcast on Optus with 1-2 games broadcast on SBS, and I will happily pay for that.

Would the A-League be better off if Sydney FC weren't crowned champions?

If football in this country is going back to a low cost model, then i would love to see the a league back on SBS, as they are the only free to air channel that has/would be committed to respectful production. I would love to see a return to Sunday football marathons on SBS, with a live game in Winter at 3pm.

Can a cut-price A-League offer more chances to local youngsters?

I used to really enjoy listening in to his late sunday night radio show, i even rang in a few times, he was always really welcoming.

Simon Hill's departure from Fox Sports leaves a gaping hole

my two cents… at the start of the a league there were only 4 games per round, meaning it was relatively easy to schedule matches outside of the hottest parts of the day whilst ensuring every game could have it’s own live time slot for tv. With the A league moving to 6 and potentially 7 or 8 games per round, unless games are scheduled simultaneously (not appealing to broadcasters), there would need to be multiple
day games in the heat of summer if the comp remains in Summer. Do a google search of ‘a league heat’ and it becomes clear this is not tenable. Long term it is hard to see the A league remaining with Foxtel and the mainstream media ignores the A league most of the time, so why not give Winter a go. Perhaps it would be more appealing to Optus to have year round football content, particularly during the european off season?

Is a switch to winter the key to unlocking the A-League's potential?
