I like this idea, but I think player welfare comes into the argument at a certain point.
Time for the NRL to introduce silver point
“watching pointless attempts at goal is nowhere near as exciting as watching sustained pressure from attacking the tryline”
Exactly. I don’t want to sit there watching ten minutes of force-back. I want to see repeat sets and brave goal-line defence.
Good point re SKD try, that was a great finish. It should be all about promoting tries and attack rather than field-goals.
Time for the NRL to introduce silver point
I can see the merit in that, but then you’d be giving three competition points for a single game. I still think there should only be two points awarded per game.

There’s obvious concern that he’ll revert to his old ways, but I think he’s got the right mix of tactical nous, kicking ability and – when he needs to have it – attacking flair to take on and beat the Lions. He’s already proven himself capable of beating Northern Hemisphere teams.
Berrick Barnes inclusion a bright prospect
Yep. Watch Brumbies game closely and you’ll see he looks to run or pass (spark a counter attack) first. When he does kick, there’s no other option and they’re great kicks – ie, banana kick from inside own 22 that reaches halfway.
Berrick Barnes inclusion a bright prospect
I have the same backline, although I wouldn’t be surprised if they overlook Nathan Merritt again.
I’d have Bird and Lewis – they’re both class players – but surely you’d want a specialist playmaker as the utility. That’s why i’d have Gidley on the bench. Pick Gallen in the front row and go with Watmough, Bird and Stewart with Lewis on the bench.
Props and reserves are anyone’s guess.
Whittling down the Blues contenders for State of Origin I
Good point re: the refs. I wanted to mention it in the article, but it didn’t seem the place to do so. Every time we go to extra time and the drop-goal-a-thon starts, referees simply stop giving away offside penalties for charge-downs. There were about three last night that should have been pulled up. I remember Soward blowing up a couple of weeks ago against the Titans for the same thing.
Why do the refs all of a sudden change their rulings in extra time?

How would you decide who wins the grand final Atawhai Drive? Coin toss?
Time for the NRL to introduce silver point
True, he’s only played about an hour this year, but he was the spark that won both the last two games for the Tahs. And he did the same thing against the Welsh last year. In his limited time on the pitch, it’s evident his kicking game has been tamed by Cheika. Last year – when the forwards really weren’t giving him a decent platform – kicking would be his first option. So far in 2013 though, we have seen Barnes look to run or pass the ball before choosing to kick.
One of the best 12s in the country.
Berrick Barnes inclusion a bright prospect
Spot on. Along with Horwill and Genia, AAC is one of the first names I’d be penciling in for any Wallabies side. His attack has been great – especially outside Foley. He will benefit even more once Barnes gets fit and hopefully plays 12. Like you, I think his defence has been absolutely outstanding this season, nothing gets past him.
AAC: the man for this moment
Completely agree with the player welfare argument, but if they’re going to play for that long, we should make a result as likely as possible – which I think this system would do. Also, these guys are all pretty fierce competitors and surely they deserve the best opportunity to get a result after playing for so long. I think Foran summed that perfectly after the match.
Time for the NRL to introduce silver point
Geez, looks like I am in the minority!! Had no idea so many people were ok with a draw. Always leaves me feeling a bit empty. Or maybe it just ruined my tipping!!

Does this mean he’s off Friday night football??
Waterhouse $50m NRL deal 'dead': reports
Agree with most of what you said, NZ ought to give something back to Fiji and other Pacific Islands.
In Australia the leaguies have the Prime Minister’s 13 which – if i recall correctly – took a game to PNG a few years ago. This could be a viable option. Might make the game a bit more competitive too.
NZRU show the height of sporting arrogance
It’s the Roosters’ defence that has really impressed me so far. Only them and the Rabbitohs look comfortable in holding onto a slim lead in the back end of games at the moment. Last two matches against the Cowboys and Manly have proven that.
Although SBW, Maloney and Co get all the big headlines, Tuivasa-Sheck has been the real highlight so far this year. Is he still eligible for Dally M Rookie of the Year?
The resurgence of the Sydney Roosters
Feel for George Smitth though. His experience would have been a major asset for the Wallabies.
Michael Hooper in box the seat for Wallabies start
One of the most skillful and talented back rowers going around today. Just a shame we’re going through a purple patch of NSW second rowers in Lewis, Watmough, Stewart, Bird, Gallen and Hindmarsh.

Farah calls for unity at Wests Tigers
He played a great game last night – good to see him back on the pitch – but talk of his selection for Origin is ridiculous. Still needs to prove himself over a month or two on and off the field.
Give Dugan time before elevating his star again
Surely QC will be selected in June. Deans must be giving himself plenty of time to watch replacement halfbacks. Nic White unlucky to miss out. Stage set for Burgess return?
Quade Cooper misses Wallaby squad selection
Great article. Good side. Don’t know about Hayman at tighthead though.
The best combined Wallaby/All Black team of the modern era (part 2)
Sam Tomkins would be massive for the Warriors if they can get him. Shaun Johnson needs a stronger halves partner than Thomas Leuluai – ironically, Leuluai was very good in England.
