Nick, thank you for your response.
Yes, alot of people are ignorant that rugby is played outside of Sydney and Brisbane. The Dewar Shield, played in Victoria, started 15 years before the Shute Shield.
As for Ben Mowen, I believe that context is king. Referring his to as “a Queenslander”, and not including his history with the Brumbies and Wallabies could allow some of the less informed Roar readers to make incorrect assumptions about him.

Pressure Points: Full throttle still to be found at Larkham's Brumbies, environment set for shake up

You seem to have omitted some key points article. Canberra does have a traditional rugby heartland, the Rep side was the Canberra Kookaburras and the comp is called the John I Dent Cup. The Kookaburra’s beat QLD and Tonga in the 70’s, and got kicked out the NSW and QLD Comps for winning them. When Jake White mandated that Brumbies players play in the John I Dent Cup, Shite Shield teams had a whinge, and refused to play the Vikings.
And Ben Mowen is a former QLD, NSW and Brumbies player. He also captained the Brumbies, captain, as well as Wallabies Captain.

I don’t understand (and have little sympathy) about the whole lack of depth with the Horatahs.
With the largest number of registered players, as well as the “Awesome” Shute Shield, having players coming through should not be an issue.
Maybe there needs to be a closer look at what NSW Rugby are doing in regards to growth, development and pathways.

Pressure Points: Now or never for Coleman at Waratahs after 'forgetting about the rugby', key signings give hope

Stuck between Brumbies and Waratahs? Yeah, nah.
Poor planning on NSW’s behalf does not make it a Brumbies problem.
Bit Iike when Penrith was kicked out of the Shite Shield and had to play in Canberra.

A bad team of Brumbies would be the equivalent of a best team of Waratahs

Who were they scheduled to play? Was it some third grade side that couldn’t make up the numbers because it was the meat raffle night at the local pub?
Don’t worry though, Phil and Hamish will fix them up.

Talent, time and toughness: Why Australia's Super Rugby coaches won't run like Eddie

Rugby Australia are shit at promoting the Super Rugby games. And Melbourne would be really hard, you would have to be very targeted in your marketing (having said that, from what I’ve seen their club and school competitions are doing well). To the Rebels credit, they do piggy back off what’s happening at the G, “if you have a ticket to an AFL game on the same day, come to the Rebels game before/afterwards and get in for free”.
Whilst RA had setup Brumbies, they have had nothing to do with the success of the team.
The underlying issue was that Super Rugby was a marketing vehicle for Fox Sports. Now that Fox Sports has gone, everyone is struggling to work out what to do with it. Super Rugby does serve a purpose in having that link between club/juniors and the National team. Plus there is finally some tribalism. I am sick and bloody tired of NSWRU (and in cahoots with RA it seems now) to do everything to move/shut down the Brumbies.

I tell my kids who play wing that I want an Andy Muirhead or Mack Hansen type winger; support your team, go looking for the ball. I don’t want David Campese’s. His comments only validate my statement.

To be honest, I expect a higher standard of journalism from you than most Rugby Journo’s. I started reading The Roar because of your stories. This article is just disappointing.
One of the values of Rugby is respect. Even for officals.
Does that respect not cross the press box?

Actually, the 7 year olds are the ones we need to engage. But that’s not my point in this discussion.

Maybe, and at the risk of the TMO getting more involved, when available use the spidercam to help with the scrum. A 7 year old with two rulers will be able to tell if the props are not pushing straight.

Doubt it. It will be a case of history repeating itself. Canberra gets invited, wins the comp and then gets kicked out.

A comment below states that NSW and ACT are cash strapped.
You mentioned: “The Queensland Reds, Melbourne Rebels and ACT Brumbies have all made partnerships with Japanese clubs while the Western Force are three quarters through their four-game series against the Cheetahs from South Africa.”

Looks like it’s time to wind up the Waratahs once and for all.

'Beacon of hope': Wallabies' RWC disaster has made Super Rugby success even more vital for the game's future

Whilst your comment about Level 2 being an entry point may be correct (I have no way to confirm it), if you are serious about coaching, you start with Smart Rugby, Foundation and Level 1. Any Club (or School) that is serious about the sport and their players should have their coaches do these courses. Rugby Australia does also have a coaching hub that provides free resources on everything from coaching juniors, women and Pacific Island players, to pre-season prep, unstructured play and position specific training.
What is concerning is the progression from Level 2 to 3. Coaching, be it paid or voluntary is to be taken seriously. If someone wants to progress, and they have the evidence that they have been successful, they shouldn’t be held back. Alternatively, if they haven’t done the foundations, are treating the course as a box ticking exercise, the parent union should say no until they have done these courses and demonstrated a level of success.
If there ever was an argument for centralisation, this would be it.

Not so 'Smart Rugby': Putting the Australian coaching education system under the spotlight

So, NSW says this should have been along time ago, QLD says that they have done alot of work behind the scenes, ACT is happy to help out where ever possible, and Vic & WA not so subtle dig they have already done alot to grow the game themselves.
So, what’s changed?

Super clubs give cautious support to centralised model as RA announces 'historic strategic reset' of rugby

Big Dave, I’m all for it. But two things need to happen. One is that Sydney needs to pull it’s head out of its harbour centred arse and help. And help I mean not having the Penrith Emu’s play in Canberra. The second is something akin to State Of Origin in the early 80’s. Make Super Rugby like State of Origin, in that you represent the state your first senior game was.
But that’s a whole different rabbit hole to go down!

CONFIRMED: Lions tour dates, venues announced with big twist on Anzac XV concept and every SR team playing

“we need to connect with where our base is”
Called it when he started. The other club comps will suffer because doesn’t know or care that Rugby is played outside of Brisbane and Sydney. The Dewar Shield (Vic) started in 1909, whilst the Premier Comp in WA started one year before the Hospital Cup (1928) and South Australia started in 1932 with the F Kenneth Milne Cup. The John I Dent Cup (the “mickey mouse” comp referred to by some Sydney clubs when Brumbies players left the Shute Shield”) started in 1950.
Yeah, lets support 21 teams whilst the other 50* playing in the premier clubs competitions around the country (*The Shute Shield mafia kicked the Penrith Emu’s out and Penrith now play in the John I Dent Cup).

Penney drops as Razor replacement: Former Tahs coach back in Super Rugby ranks

Don’t think for a second that NSW, and to a lesser extent QLD, will do anything to promote a third tier. Canberra Kookaburra played in the Shute Shield and got kicked out. The Kookaburra’s then played in the Hospital Cup, won that, and then got kicked out. When Jake White made the Brumbies players play for Canberra Clubs in the John I Dent Cup, the Shute Shield clubs spat the dummy and referred to the John I Dent Cup as a mickey mouse comp. When the Tuggeranong Vikings won the John I Dent Cup, they challenged Sydney Uni, Uni chickened out and said no (Dan McKellar was coach of the Vikings at the time).
My point, NSW and Sydney Uni will go out of their way to help to promote the game nationally. And they are about to get Phil Waugh as CEO of Rugby Australia.
