Logically speaking, that is what should be done, get the coach first. But but but, it is Collingwood!

New frontrunner emerges in Collingwood coaching vacancy

Not sure how many agree but whenever Smithy gets an early goal in the game, he becomes a different beast. He becomes very moody when he doesn’t get a goal, early goal makes a massive difference to his morale.

Cuttler has cleared all our doubts, the Crows game was his turning point. He was a just a big-bodied player who couldn’t do much but something has gotten into him and he has become a very very efficient player.

Essendon Round 23 review: The Bombers are finals bound

If the board was prepared to pay off Woosha, we could have promoted Rutten in 2020 itself but the board was clearly not interested in throwing off money.

Bombers Round 21 review: 'Easily the best win of the season'

Walla is exhausted and a week off would do him wonders but unfortunately we don’t have anyone who can do what he does!

Bombers Round 21 review: 'Easily the best win of the season'

What a great win! The best of the year!

Proud of the ways the Dons played and even more proud that it came against the number-1 team in the ladder.

And this is what happens when you kick straight. Last two games have been 16.6 & 15.7 – It was so bloody soothing to see a single-digit figure in the behinds column. The last two games (6 behinds v SYD R20 & 7 behinds v WBD R21) are the only occasions were we have managed to keep the behinds column to 7 or less. We have at lost 5 games this year because of poor kicking (the highest being 13 v Hawks in R1). Imagine if we had kicked like this since R1, we would be sitting in a far more comfortable position!

I felt this was the game where almost everyone stepped up their game after the close losses in the past two weeks. Stuzza has had his fair share of inconsistency issues but he was good against Bruce, needless to say anything about JD Laverde, Ridds, Redman. Hind had his best game in a long time (I think he the opposition teams have curbed his gut-running instincts in the last 5-6 rounds). Have to admit that Cuttler has really put in a string of consistent performances (since the Crows game) and he has indeed gained a lot of respect.

Almost everyone stepped-up in the midfield, Shiel is getting his touch back. How good will it be to have a in-form Shiel and Jakey Stringer in centre-bounces? it is a scary proposition! Not many can contain them in the centre-square.

Two-Peter-Meter – A massive salute to you, sir! You have set your own standard, we look forward to matching it often.

And to Truck – Massive credit to him for being able to turn it round after a lacklustre 1st term ( think the Dogs had double the number of disposals as us in the first term).

Bombers Round 21 review: 'Easily the best win of the season'

True – The premiership is yet to lose Clarko’s influence since 2013.

Who are the AFL's greatest ever coaches?

I’m beginning to dislike the fact that we are putting our legs up using the “overachieved” and “surpassed expectations” tags.

Essendon Round 20 review: Missed it by that much

I have no complaints about the season thus far, the media were desperate for us to be stuck between 16th and 18th and made all of them eat humble pie.

But the way we played against GWS was bad, very bad. We lost to Tigers (prior to their collapse), Dees and Cats – good teams and we battled and went down. But this game against GWS was there for their taking, we just needed to kick the ball straight. More than form, I think what has kicked into our forward line is fatigue, one of the reasons why we have lost the game is the lack of depth in our roster, we can’t keep playing Donny Ham and an extinct Zaka and hope for results, they are simply not good enough to play in red and black right now.

One are where our lack of depth in the roster is hurting is the forward line – Chooksy and Walla were so impressive till 13th/14th round and the fatigue seems to be taking a toll on them. Walla is inhuman but Chooksy looked tired in the first terms v GWS. From kicking 21.7 in the first 7 rounds, Chook has kicked 4.7 last 6 games, the fans are absolutely grateful for what he has done this year but it is unfair to expect Chook to do it for 20 games in a row

And I just hope that this “We aren’t ready for this year” train of thought, has gotten into Truck and players.

'It’s been a good year, but they’re not ready': Why the Bombers won't play finals

Did anyone else think Cuttler has been way more than half-decent in the last 2 games (weaker opposition, I agree). But prior to the Crows game, he was a just heavy-bodied player who couldn’t do much.

Bombers Round 18 Review: Baby Bombers bank another win

Cuttler is a big-bodied player who can do a LOT but for some reason he just becomes invisible. He probably played his best game in the Dons colours v the Crows but as mentioned earlier the Crows are a below-par team.

Ham is a good talent but he isn’t strong enough to put together strong performances at the highest level, he probably 1 year of solid VFL experience and a better physique to perform consistently at this level.

Waterman is such a good kick (amongst the best at the club), he is capable of kicking a bomb from outside the 50 every game and he gets an opportunity too. But for some reason he doesn’t seem to trust himself at all, it is very irritating to watch a player who is such a good kick keep throwing these opportunities away.

Ready for a run at the eight: Essendon Round 17 review

Credit for Bombers for pulling a 10-goal win (3rd this year) but Adelaide were really really poor. We should just use the win v Crows as a confidence booster and not read much into it

Ready for a run at the eight: Essendon Round 17 review

Not complaining about the win. But this was a game that should have been won by at least 80-90 points. Amongst the teams competing for the 7th & 8th spots, we are the only team with a 100+ percentage and it is important to keep it higher than the others.

Not many might agree but it was the percentage that screwed us in 2019 (2 atrocious losses v Power and Dogs) denied us the 7th spot and we ran into a red hot Eagles. If we had finished 7th then we would have played GWS who were beatable.

Ready for a run at the eight: Essendon Round 17 review

Biggest concern from the weekend was how tired some of the players looked. Cox took more than a quarter to get his hands on the ball. I rate Archie very very highly but he looks tired too, he needs more muscle to play in the role that he is doing right now, he gets tackled a little too often (we can put some of it down to fatigue too). Jonesy did his best but this is one of his first proper games in wet conditions, he would have learnt his lessons.

How much ever we love seeing these kids playing week in week out, I don’t think it is fair on our part to expect them produce their best-game every week, their bodies need much more time to get used to such rigour.

Apart from our young guns, Chooksy really needs a week off. He was crawling in the fourth quarter. He has exceeded all expectations this year with 30-goal haul but he is running out of steam. Truck should look to give one of the next two 2 weekends off.

Truck & co have been credited for bringing Hindy back to life by playing him at half-back but I think we are not using one of his biggest strengths, his raw pace. I think Truck threw him forward against Tiges which led to Bombers taking the lead, his contribution was significant. Against a Cats defence which is not known for speed, Truck could have thrown Hindy forward for a quarter which would have pushed the defenders back a bit.

Essendon Round 16 review

Don’t think Esava is the right option. He is an average forward. He had a good run in the forward line in 2019 and failed to capitalize on it. Even this year, with Stanley out for so long, he couldn’t make the ruckman spot his own.

Essendon Round 16 review

As pointed out rightly, Melbourne were there to be beaten. Our game dropped in the second half. There were signs of Rutten taking notes from Pies win over Demons in Rd 14. The Pies avoided long bombs into the 50 at all cost and kept going flat to the edge of the 50.

I thought Bombers were trying something like that in the first half and add to that, the tactic used by Stringer & co early when they knew that May likes to come high up and Stringer tried to score from outside 50.

I didn’t see the Bombers do this in the second half. Especially late in the 3rd Qtr and in the 4th Qtr, we just kept kicking long and high into Melbourne’s defensive 50 and it made no sense. I’m not sure about the numbers but I don’t think the Bombers even took 10 Contested Marks in I50.

Bucks and Pies showed us the template in Rd13 and Melbourne did look weak that day and in the first half when Bombers did try the same but unfortunately chose not to do it in the second half.

Essendon Round 15 review

I think Gold Coast have ran out of opportunities to save themselves. So many priority picks, first round picks and so many gun selections and they can’t keep hold of them. At least 8-9 of their players have gone to win flags and play finals regularly. For how long are they going to keep complaining that players aren’t staying with them for long enough? They have ran out of opportunities and excuses.

AFL should just admit that the Gold Coast experiment has failed and relocate them to the Apple Isle.

The AFL should become a fully national competition

This is naaaasty!

“This is like saying it was a good idea for the Titanic to hit the iceberg as it gave them a chance to test out that they had too few lifeboats”

The bluster of the Pies

Going back to the centre after each score will result in the game becoming longer. More importantly, more dead time.

Seven rule changes the AFL should consider

Very nice read.

Actually, the Suns trades have been absolute shockers. Some mindless trading.

Most of it is down to their board and list manager but I’m sure there must be another reason why even the up and coming players don’t want to stay in Gold Coast for long. Just look at the number of top-10 picks who have headed out of Gold Coast. The couple of obvious reasons could be more money and maybe a chance to play in September regularly but it is quite baffling why they can’t get their young guns to commit to their project and hold on to them for 4-5 years at least.

The 2017 trade period revisited: The Suns needed a trade ban for their own good

I’m not demeaning the value or importance of family. But I do have a question when the players keep saying it is hard to be away from family for 2-3 months. The Aussie cricketers went on a 4-month tour of British Isles last year and it is something that happens very commonly in cricket with every team. If other sportsmen can do it, why can’t the AFL players do it?

Families in hubs defeat the purpose and the AFL needs to stand strong

Agree. Even I guess GWS will miss out on the top-8 this year.

AFL preview series: Geelong Cats vs Hawthorn Hawks

No one is denying the fact that the Cats struggled after their bye round. But they still managed to do enough take the minor-premiership.

A silly action by their blue-eyed forward cost Cats a real chance in the preliminary final. At the end of 3-quarter time, Cats were only behind by 4 points. And Hawkins’ replacement Harry Taylor had a night to forget. Hawkins would have surely made a difference. The Tigers were better and would have still have won but Hawkins would have given them a real chance.

Losing Kelly is a blow but getting Stevens was a good trade. They have got a 30-goal forward in Jenkins which is another good trade.

No chance Geelong are dropping down to 8th, they are still a top-4 team in my opinion.

He is class. But let him play half-a-season at least.
