Was thinking about this the whole game. I’m also wondering about Powells form. Thought Tuttles service was generally slick and gave the rebs a more cohesive attack. than the skip step and pass from Powell.

Ironically it was the Drua that took that lesson to heart and got the chocolates.

Indeed – misrepresented, as I understand it he clocked a max speed of 10.6m/s in training, mind you thats still smoking fast. However that was a while ago, consider when he started at Brums he was only a lanky 79kg. Still, would have some handy pace and he has a massive left boot.

Spot on Sanchez,
What a colossal contest in the tight and some great rugby played by both sides. Realistically the unforced turnovers killed us and that last driving maul in the french red zone was the nail in the coffin. Do you think we’ll get a point of decision making speed difference with a Tate /JOC pairing as opposed to Gordon / Lolesio?

Great Wrap, it was fantastic to be at the Reds match and it delivered in spades! The crowd was very quiet after the banks intercept with Brums clinical start, but as they pegged back it just grew and grew and by the end the whole joint was electric. Cant fathom why the Brums didnt kick the field goal to win it, they had ample opportunity…Still, two teams going hammer and tong the full 80 with a crowd behind them is beautiful to watch.

The Wrap: The Reds ride the bumps all the way to Super Rugby grand final

I was at the game and seemed that the Brums were really targetting him, double teaming quite often which probs to be expected and why McReight probably had more hitups in the first half. The defence in that first 30 from both teams was bone crunching, even with the crowd you could hear the solid contacts. Similarly Samu was heavily targetted by the reds.

Long time lurker, first time poster. But seriously what did people expect?

I get the gnashing of teeth. The Tahs and NSWRU are trying to run a business (poorly). Penney is an excellent coach, the team has (young) talent and it is improving. But back to back record scores isn’t acceptable. In the context of the Waratahs its understandable, but it doesn’t change that calculus to sponsors and the like. Its not personal, the board has to be seen to be taking action and they will be looking at the longer game.

Penney is nearly half way through his contract, IMO the results will get worse – they are not up to SR standard (not his fault btw) and he is responsible. The decision to me is admitting that the season is a write off and come the end of the season it would be really hard to keep faith with Penney coming into contract renewal the drums would beat on, its a hiding to nothing in that position.

They absolutely need to invest in Senior players and resources, but that will take time, if its not certain he’s there for the long haul then call it now, give the assistants the reins, 3 months pays him out the rest of the season. He gets to leave with reputation preserved cos he didnt get the tools and time to do his job.

A new coach will need to be sourced through a proper process just like Penney was and that takes time. Doing it now that they’ve written the season off means one can start to pick up the pieces at the end of this one with some clear air and perhaps a hand in the recruitment (I dont think any coach will take the chalice unless they get that).

Now, dont get me wrong, I dont like the decision or even support the decision, but I can understand the thinking. The board is accountable for the whole rockshow. By writing off the season, it is inevitable that there will be some substantive renewal, even in that hopelessly conflicted mess of a self licking ice cream cone that is the NSWRU closed shop. This should start with the chair, because the situation is unacceptable. But board renewal also takes time, Boards will always have an orderly transition process and this will be no different but likely we’ll have an inkling by July.

The real question my fellow Roarers is how long ARU/NSWRU/QRU etc. will persist with hopelessly conflicted, ineffective and inefficient governance structures to run professional sports businesses in a global market? But a question worth discussion.
