The Bombers biggest issues is one Adrian Doddoro. He is old fashioned and out of touch. The issue is, the Bombers aren’t the “BIG” club they claim to be anymore, and coupled with Doddoro burning nearly every bridge with nearly all AFL clubs in terms of his stance on trading means that the chickens will come home to roost big time this year and in the subsequent years from now. Not only do the Bombers need to reset their whole playing list, but also their recruitment department. If they don’t clear the air and move Doddoro on, they will ALWAYS be bad air with the other clubs. The Lions have even come out today and categorically stated that they will not under ANY circumstances trade for Daniher. He either comes as a RFA and the bombers get what they get from the AFL, or if they match, they will let him walk into the draft where Swans are waiting. Either way, Bombers will lose him, either for something less than they want or for nothing at all. Lions have grown up and are no longer willing to be pushed around, and as Bombers have no goodwill with any clubs, no one is going to give them an inch. If it were Geelong and Stephen Wells, other clubs would be more amenable to work on something. Going to take years of some goodwill from Bombers before other clubs let bygones be bygones.

What on earth is going on, Essendon?

As a RFA, nothing unless Bombers force a trade by matching their contract offer. They are highly unlikely to do that unless compensation drops outside of their own first round pick. Also, Lions would not be able to offer much more than 2 late first rounders (one this year and one next year) as they are likely to be in contention again and for the forseeable future. They will have to likely de-list a few, but they would be considered surplus to requirements and likely not be able to reach the level of a fit Daniher. The issue here is will we get a fit Daniher, as although we have had good luck with Hodge, McCarthy and Birchall, we haven’t been so fortunate with Marcus Adams. Comes with the territory I guess, but he could be a big Albatross hanging around our necks if the medicos can’t get him right. Worth the risk, but imagine the outcry if they managed to not only snag a premiership, but also one of the 2 biggest FA this year, to load up for another tilt at history. Could 2001,02 & 03, be followed by premierships in 2020,21 and 22???? That’s why the list management team have to earn their dollars. Lions have been building for 5 years, now, can they make good on all this hard work and good management?

Daniher nominates Brisbane as new club for 2021

As a Lions supported, all I want to see is growth from last year. That means a minimum of one finals win. If its this week, it gives them a great chance of going all the way. If its the week after and we go to prelim as the “visiting” team, that’s still ok. I truly believe that this season is like the Hawks from 2008, being if they pinch one, woohoo, but no one is really expecting them to do it. It will be the next 2-4 years that they really need need to bring one home.
They are still largely an inexperienced team, but one gaining that every season. If they add a key forward this off season, they will head into next season as one of the favorites and with 2 seasons of finals football behind them.
They really only need to stay close to Richmond, and having watched their recent encounters, what is splitting these two teams is that experience of playing and winning finals vs inexperience from the Lions players. If they compose themselves in the critical moments, kick straight, then they should push them all the way. Whether they win or not, its just a matter of really believing that they can win.
But to win the premiership, you have to beat the best. you can’t depend on others to knock out your bogey team. If they can overcome their hoodoo, this team is not afraid of any of the others, having demolished West Coast the last 2 times they’ve met, while also doing a number on the Power. They are split with Geelong the last few times, and only a bad quarter cost them the last time.
Either way, go the Lions!!!!!
